Just released from the Senate Armed Services Committee:
This afternoon, June 26, 2008, the committee was able to establish a quorum and voted, by voice vote, to favorably report out the nomination of General David H. Petraeus, USA to be general and Commander, US Central Command; LTG Raymond T. Odierno, USA to be general and Commander, Multi-National Force-Iraq; as well as 2,121 pending military nominations in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. All nominations were immediately reported to the floor following the committee’s action.
There was never any doubt that Petraeus and Odierno would be confirmed. But it would be nice if, you know, Odierno had to explain a strategy for the next year in Iraq. As for Petraeus, his move to Central Command is both a real challenge and a potential opportunity for a President Obama, as I explain in this piece that the right beat the shit out of me for but I stand behind entirely.

Odierno (who is a big freakin’ dude as you mention), hasn’t developed a plan because the CinC is just riding on the coattails of the surge’s success until he’s booted out of office. Once again, domestic politics are hampering the mission in Iraq.
