As a rule, I don’t criticize Sy Hersh pieces. Reporters do not have the right to fuck with Hersh until they’ve run through a Georgia barracks trying to find Calley or learned about an entirely secret war that Congress never dreamed of or published excerpts of the Taguba report. You do this, you can criticize. Me, I shut up and watch the journalistic version of Nas do his thing.
There are, however, those who believe that with his Iran reporting, Hersh is going through a Nastradamus phase. Every six months Hersh writes another piece that says there’s going to be an attack on Iran in six months! they say. LOL he’s fallen off! Well, look. Here’s how you read a Hersh piece.
Editors need a hook. They need what’s known in the biz as a Strong Lede. In other words, they want to be able to answer the question: What’s This Piece About? It’s a journalistic convention that your answer can’t be Well, shit, Hersh is the best in the game, let’s just let him spill his notebook into print. But that’s the actual answer! So there has to be this veneer, this patina, this glossy sheen put atop the piece. It’s like an R&B hook grafted into a really hot freestyle. Unfortunately, people judge the product by the hook, not by the freestyle.
So read deep into the piece, because you find its real rationale there — not that we’re definitely going to attack Iran, but an on-the-record interview last month that Hersh did with Fox Fallon, for instance:
Admiral Fallon acknowledged, when I spoke to him in June, that he had heard that there were people in the White House who were upset by his public statements. “Too many people believe you have to be either for or against the Iranians,” he told me. “Let’s get serious. Eighty million people live there, and everyone’s an individual. The idea that they’re only one way or another is nonsense.”
When it came to the Iraq war, Fallon said, “Did I bitch about some of the things that were being proposed? You bet. Some of them were very stupid.”
Hot fire. Or CIA Director Michael Hayden telling Congressional Democrats, who acquiesced to some fateful changes of language in last year’s defense bill viz. Iran, not to worry about never knowing precisely what sort of covert operations that Special Ops forces will be doing (never mind that until Rumsfeld, they did clandestine operations, not covert shit):
“The agency says we’re not going to get in the position of helping to kill people without a Finding,” the former senior intelligence official told me. He was referring to the legal threat confronting some agency operatives for their involvement in the rendition and alleged torture of suspects in the war on terror. “This drove the military people up the wall,” he said. As far as the C.I.A. was concerned, the former senior intelligence official said, “the over-all authorization includes killing, but it’s not as though that’s what they’re setting out to do. It’s about gathering information, enlisting support.” The Finding sent to Congress was a compromise, providing legal cover for the C.I.A. while referring to the use of lethal force in ambiguous terms.
The defensive-lethal language led some Democrats, according to congressional sources familiar with their views, to call in the director of the C.I.A., Air Force General Michael V. Hayden, for a special briefing. Hayden reassured the legislators that the language did nothing more than provide authority for Special Forces operatives on the ground in Iran to shoot their way out if they faced capture or harm.
If you need any more convincing about the value of Hersh’s Iran stuff, consider that people are most likely telling Hersh this stuff in order to forestall an attack by making the administration’s conniving a matter of public record. (For a mostly-skeptical take on an Iran attack, check out this roundtable Laura Rozen assembled for MoJo.) His pieces — or at least their toplines — are self-refuting! It’s all very Derridean.
One day, journalistic convention will decide that placing reporters like Hersh within the box of a lede for a piece that needs no lede is a silly idea. Then, my friends, we will finally have the free play of notebook material. But until then, we have to read Hersh with a bit of a knowing eye. You can hate all you like, but GOD’S SON is across the belly and he’ll prove you lost already.
Update: More on the latest Hersh piece from Marcy here and here.

About ATTACKERMAN
RSS/XML Feed
I’ve been prepped for an Iran attack before Bush/Cheney drive to the Capitol for the inauguration, but lately have believed that it would be after the election.
But McShame is now saying that he’ll win the election with a last-48-hour turnaound, so that seems to up the schedule to maybe a week before November, so McCain can bask in the glory of the iranian people throwing roses on the streets of Tehran for the US attack.
I (really!) think that there’s a spectrum of opinion within DoD, State, NSC, Intelligence and the WH, and therefore the game is still underway, and this why Hersh continues to get vibes of war. But Bush and Cheney have the Joker, and their hardon for another oil war – and the premature orgasm for fucking Obama at the polls if possible, or in governing if not possible – makes it very likely that something will happen before next Jan 20th. Who has the power to deter Bush/Cheney? Noone, that I can see, except perhaps King Abdullah.
Hi Spencer. You’re right that Hersh has the journalistic equivalent of a ghetto pass for his previous work. And the fact is, he may well have been correct in his reporting on Iran hawks at the time it was done. Seeing the admin’s warmongers frustrated was probably as big a surprise to him as to the rest of us, maybe more so.
Not kidding at all, if one follows the pipeline development through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India and the other Pakistan wants to develop with Iran – contracts are already signed – you get a pretty good chronology of when things are going to heat up for Iran. This is a US plan/plot/goal since before Clinton, even. And now that the pipeline from Turkmenistan is a done deal to cut through the tribal areas of Afghanistan – see any heated US movement there lately? uh huh – through the tribal areas of Pakistan (there’s a bill still in the mix in Congress, proposing what we remember as a Free Enterprise Zone of the Reagan years precisely there – what were you thinking, Maria Cantwell? cripes) to India and backed by the US (whew, says Henry Kissinger and Karzai and Khalilzad…) there’s another in play that is similar only involved Iran. I keep hearing its a done deal then, no, somebody’s pestering. That would be the US. A darned good way to block this pipeline and make Iran suffer, in addition to the countries who need the income, would be to provoke an attack. Before November.
attackerman, this piece is timely indeed and we have to get on the ball fast;
the following pretty much clinches the deal, from dana perino and I wish it was as alarming to everyone else as it is for me, it is the biggest non denial I have ever heard when asked if bush is going to attack Iran if obama is elected, this is a clear, unaldulterated, “probably” as far as how this administration parses their intention;
man, we are in for quite a ride
perino pretty much sealed the deal with that statement
don’t forget, bush has already attacked Iran and their leadership covertly, financing insurgents and sponsoring assasination, he has definately declared war already, without a declaration from congress I might add
both fakeosi and hagel have told us an attack on Iran without congressional approval will set the table, yet it remains baren
if perono making that statement is the same thing as bush saying “we’re going in” then I haven’t been paying attention
Bush was on teevee thanking Congress this morning for the money to conduct military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other theaters.
But Bush and Cheney have the Joker, and their hardon for another oil war – and the premature orgasm for fucking Obama at the polls if possible, or in governing if not possible – makes it very likely that something will happen before next Jan 20th.
You think that attacking Iran is a political winner? Please.
The country is fed up with Bush’s wars. An attack on Iran is more likely to end up with both the instigators and the proponents tarred, feathered and ridden out of town on a rail, than in electoral triumph, imo.
but they think they can become strongmen and they think americans will lie down
they will also suspend the constitution and they will jail their oponents if they have to
we are talking about sociopaths and madmen
Isn’t Georgie overdue for his annual summer at
campDa Ranch? G’on ahead, George; ain’t nobody gonna miss ya in D.C.And if the phone rings, just don’t answer, please.

I tend to agree with you, however, we aren’t going to know about until the bombs are falling. Once that happens the American people will have to live with the consequences of that act whether or not we run those criminal bastards out of town.
I wish I could agree with, jayt, but I can’t. These psychopaths have played the fear-factor before and they’ll do it again. Then they’ll shut down the toobz…..see how much action can be generated with internet ‘down’ and no newsmedia to trust. I think we’re in for the worst of it. No dems standing up for citizens. Call me a pessimist, but I just think our side is down and out.
So at the end of 2007, Bush goes secretly to GANG of 8…with our Dem majority Congress…. and according to Sy …. Bush wants $400 million for covert Iran operations. And Congress has the power to WITHHOLD FUNDING, even though they don’t. Even though the head of the Pentagon begged Congress, Bob Gates warned Congress … NOT TO ENCOURAGE PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE IN IRAN WITH THESE COVERT OPS …. And yet our wimpy or stupid or spineless or …. what is going on Congress …. signs the check?
I am adding another objection to my 4th of July no immunity Senate phone calls!!!
they are already falling, the president has already funded insurgents against the government and has already authorized assassination
this deal has already begun
I guess I am not sure what you are saying. Do you take Perino’s statement to mean we like diplomacy? I think we have alot of reason to believe nothing from that Press room pulpit.
when firedoglake goes down, when think progress goes down, when kos goes down, all at the same time, then hang on to hats
I had a typo, I take that statement to clearly NOT rule out attacking Iran, that was what it was intended to do, it was crystal clear, notice my bold from the quote
The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
I’ve always thought Bush had no intention of leaving the White House. It’s been obvious for a long time they are planning something.
I tend to agree with you, however, we aren’t going to know about until the bombs are falling. Once that happens the American people will have to live with the consequences of that act whether or not we run those criminal bastards out of town.
And what would some of those consequences be?
Immediate impeachment, citizens descending on D.C. in numbers never-before-seen, and a revolt by the U.S. military (who, orders be damned, are not going to shoot at fellow American citizens).
Thanks. Got it..and I definitely agree with you at 7. These people see themselves above the law and willing to do anything. I posted earlier I think we should be writing letters/phone calls/contact Maureen Dowd and enlist the Senior Bush to beg to impeace 43. Force him to finally stand up to protect this country from his psychopath son….a great patriotic sacrifice. Bush Sr. was the one who had the sense NOT to go into Baghdad. He really has an obligation to standup and protect this country; he can team up with Bill Clinton to force impeaching this criminal.
Remember Kent State, May 1970?
Remember Kent State, May 1970?
yeah, and I remember the massive out-pouring of good-will toward the military after that incident. /s
Prolly not.
‘Sides what to you think BlackWater is for?
Maybe that would be for the best. Shootout at the Mall?
Anyone think they are really ready for that?
I do think the nation could split asunder. Un’ens in CA could do jes fine without the idiots on the Eastern Coast allus fukin’ things up with their clever financial schemes.
and then there’s the not insignificant “problem” of lots of dead innocents in a probable nuclear strike.
They have a voice, too.
And so does the rest of the world.
ACitizen– having lived in CA myself, y’all can’t claim that the East Coast have all the stupid ideas.
They want oil. Iran has oil. Iraq oil is messed up and they are trying to fix it. But the BIG PLAN, oil now from Iran. The same playbook. Accusations about nuclear proliferation from them, and then walk in, occupy, take the oil.
William Kristol came out and said he expects Bush to attack Iran if he thinks McCain may not win.
They are sticking to the same insane/Cheney playbook.
Shootout at the Mall?
It could happen…
Anger at the military post-Kent State didn’t keep those kids from getting killed.
They want oil. Iran has oil. Iraq oil is messed up and they are trying to fix it. But the BIG PLAN, oil now from Iran.
A quibble. They don’t want *the oil*, they want *control* of the oil. Supply/demand = profits for themselves and buddies.
Not for the good of the country, for me or for you, but for themselves. If an acceptable (to the neo-cons) oil deal with Iraq were to be announced tomorrow, 2/3 of the troops would be out damned near immediately.
No…would not do that.
Remember what Wes Clark said… a long time ago…

One thing the Bushies hate and fear is sunshine being directed their way. It won’t be clear what the effects of Hersh’s reporting have been until some honest people can examine the records of the last eight years. It’s not out of the question that Hersh has been right all along, but that his reporting has simply kept pushing the attack on Iran back as he publicizes what’s happening.
Anger at the military post-Kent State didn’t keep those kids from getting killed.
True – but it’s never happened again, has it?
btw, weren’t those National Guard (i.e. part-time) soldiers involved in the Kent State shootings? (serious question)
No, it hasn’t happened again. Nor has any university ever called for federal assistance since.
Yes, they were National Guard. Some have expressed remorse at opening fire, others have not.

Yeah, they’d like to shut down the Toobz.
But let us consider what that would mean:
– The auto and home insurance agents couldn’t do their jobs, because they couldn’t access records via their systems.
– The cops, city governments, county and state governments couldn’t function properly — couldn’t post public meetings notices, budget updates, permit info, transit schedules, yadda, yadda…
– The retailers, eTailors, and other businesses would lose transactions, customers, and sales.
– The churches are actually very heavy users of the Internet throughout the USA, and it’s tough to suppose that Congresscritters and Senators (or their respective staff) really want to get the phone calls that will come in if the Awana scheules and the Weekly News aren’t available to congregations because the Toobz are down.
And then, there are a myriad other entities — for starters, wellsfargo.com, bankofamerica.com, ups.com, expedia.com and …you get the idea.
I don’t think messing with the Toobz is an economic, political, or socially acceptable risk.
You omitted the online consumers, which actually might be the largest group to raise hell. Even compulsive shoppers can be good for something.
Even compulsive shoppers can be good for something.
heh. Yeah, ya piss off the Home Shopping Network junkies at your own peril.
They can clamp the tubes shut to THIS PLACE at the clik of a switch.
Did you not read of the Obamacan assault on numerious sites critical of His Oness? They gamed the system so Blogger thought the sites were spamming and….
Poof…
Site shut down.
Now if Blogger can do that. I’d say the odds that the NSA can fry Jane’s hardrive, and yours, any time they want.
Nope there’s only one way to fix this.
Take back the government. One seat at a time. The Polity is with us. 81% when polled said they did not want the gummint spyin’ on them.
I wonder if Obama can do three real stupid things tomorrow?
Guess we will find out.
economic profit trumps basic human welfare. oil ($$$) thicker than blood, other people’s.
Obama will do many stupid things. He may have been read the news and is “blackmailed”. It seems like the congress is blackmailed as well. How can they give $400MM to destabilize another country?
Are they crazy?
It’s not alarming that we have a twice un-elected president who signed off on the 9/11 attacks in order to justify wars that have killed over a million innocent people in Afghanistan and Iraq while promising Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that he would take care of the “Iranian threat” that 16 intelligence agencies said is not there because the opposition party will surely stand in the way.
bingo
this is the only reason Nancy has not taken this man out of office
and there are more forms of blackmail then personal malfeasance
they might threated another “terrorist attack” and lost humanity, and no, I do NOT put that past these maniacs
Laura Flanders upstairs with grit tv.
economic profit trumps basic human welfare. oil ($$$) thicker than blood, other people’s.
Don’t ever doubt it.
You and I – hell, the entire American populace, are less than irrelevant – we’re just a damned nuisance.
Except, of course, when we have our wallets open, transforming *our* dollars into *their* dollars.
They took our tax dollars and made us ALL colluders/enablers to their evils. American karma…. we have to turn this around. We are all guilty on the continuum… I know people who are putting a lot more on the line than I. And I know an awful lot of ostriches I am too cowardly to earnestly challenge. I want to ramp up my activism.
We as a country have collective guilt and responsibility, and the killer of it is, the perpetration of atrocity continues on a massive scale.
RESPONSIBILITY = THE ABILITY TO RESPOND
An area BO and all of us need to work on. Opportunism of the Repugs vs. Response-ability hopefully of Dem activists.
STATUS QUO = CORPORATE OWNED EITHER DEM OR REPUG LEADERSHIP
‘Why’ do they do it?
Are they complicit out of greed and self-interest, or are they, poor things, victims of a dastardly BLACKMAIL scheme so profoundly pervasive as to be beyond belief?
I would suggest that it doesn’t really matter, ‘why’, it matters that, for whatever reasons, the REALITY is that they will NOT support the Constitution nor will they respond to the genuine needs of the people.
Let us then, knowing these things, develop our tactics and overall strategy cognizant of the fact that for the forseeable future, IT IS UP TO US, essentially, and we must have little or no expectation of help, real help, from the political class.
but what they’re doing now doesn’t stand a peahen hope of destabilizing a neighborhood let alone a country of 80 million – surely they have staffers a la Steve Clemons to tell them this – no ?
per Hersh they claim to be using arab minorities – in Iran.
anyone with a 5th grade social studies book knows it is doomed to failure. even those aligned against the mullahs self identify as Persians
so – is it a red herring ?, were these arabs the only ones to take the bait?, is it a whisper to a scream
doesn’t much matter whether they are being stoopid or evil – this will end badly
hi, just popping in, haven’t read everything yet so don’t know if anyone posted that hersch was on terry gross’ fresh air on npr today about iran–link h/t john in sac.

Other theaters? He’s going after movie theaters now! What the hell! Spit.
Okay, all kidding aside….this comment is proof George just thinks the whole world is just a stage where he and his Pigs can perform. Spit again.
Some how this administration has managed despite NOW being extremely unpopular to completely control the agenda and get all their crazy dreams fulfilled.
We demanded in 06 to end the war and we have a very popular candidate running who says he wants out and the congress give another 200mm for war. Are they insane? or are they just bribed? or do they know something we don’t know?
What an incredible disappointment these people are.. even Wexler buys into the “Iran threat” rubbish. This nation is in deep doo and it’s not just Cheney and Shrub.

DDOS attacks can shut off websites singly, individually, selectively. They are generally launched by for-hire botnets. There is no reason anyone with enough funds could not shut off DailyKOS, FireDogLake, Emptywheel, Balloon Juice, Glennzilla, TPM, etc.
The day that all those sites go offline simultaneously is probably Day 0 of the new war. Do you have plans ready when your web / email / SMS go dead?
Freeway Blogger
My bet is that Bush/Cheney will launch an attack on Iran timed to give maximum political benefit to McCain. They will try to contrast McCain’s rabid pro-let’s-bomb-the-shit-out-of-Iran posture with Obama.
One important aspect of this article that has gone unnoted here and elsewhere is the timing with respect to military planning requirements.
The new moon starts this weekend. Our stealth bombers and such always, always, always attack when there is no moon to light up the sky. If you can’t sse them on radar and you can’t see them in the sky you won’t have much to base your defense on. Spray and pray when you hear them is the best you can do. Good luck with that.
So I would expect more enlightening information to be released 29 days from now and 59 days after that. I have guessed at the date, based on planning issues faced by this administration, and have been saying for a couple months now that their best opportunity to strike is August 29th. This is based on two primary factors. First is the new moon on the 30th, second is that it is the Friday before Labor Day and most of America will be busy with Labor Day festivities and therefore dependant on the teevee for their news. This allows them the best opportunity to establish a common storyline for the public. Third contributing factor for this date is everyone immediately thereafter going back to school and getting ready for winter with high heating bills and battening down the hatches for hibernation mode.
Later full moons this year occur early in the week or on Thanksgiving and Christmas weekend so are less likely to garner much bloodlust from the public at large. The weekend preceding the national election may be considered too volitile for effective manipulation of the voting public.
I just thought I’d share…
Umm I don’t get this post at all. What’s the point? I think we need Seymour Hersh. I don’t have a problem with his style. I don’t think he’s being cynical either. The real chicken little is Joe Lieberman, Cheney et al.
Umm assassinations > escalation is a real possibilitywe have to consider. Good for those who are trying to forestall an attack. I hate to say it but I find this piece kind of trite and glib.
> yeah, and I remember the massive out-pouring of good-will toward the military after that incident.
Lots of people wanted to give them medals for marksmanship.
