It's clear that John McCain's teetering political strategy on Iraq needs, in order to have the beginnings of a plausible chance of success, the American people to view the surge entirely out of the context of the war. Hence, via Marc Ambinder again, quotes like these:
Apparently Sen. Obama, who does not understand what's happening in Iraq or fails to acknowledge the success in Iraq, would rather lose a war than lose a campaign.
If you view the surge within the context of the Iraq war, it looks like an A-Rod at-bat in the postseason: a monster home-run into the black seats at Yankee Stadium, to be sure, but only occurring when the Yanks are down 14-2, and only after he's missed every previous opportunity to influence the game. To continue the analogy -- which really flatters McCain -- Jed Lewison of the Jed Report has put together this brilliant 9-minute video reminding everyone of what John McCain's judgment on Iraq was like when it mattered.

Wow — extraordinary compilation by Jed. Thanks, Spencer….
One little problem with the analogy: there’s no conceivable “victory” in this game that can be achieved by scoring runs. The goal here isn’t just to have the Yankees win, but to have them win, clear them off the field, clear out all of the coaches and the batboys and the fans and the vendors and the ground crew, build a new Yankee stadium across the street, demolish the old Yankee stadium, and then have the next season’s Yankees win the World Series in their brand-new ballpark.
It’s not just that it’s flattering McCain to compare the results of the surge to a monster home run. It’s that, even if it were a monster home run plus three grand slams and the Yankees won the 2008 World Series off of A-Rod’s bat, your bookie still wouldn’t pay up if what you’d bet on was that the 2009 squad was going to go all the way.
Hey! I found the ABC News video of McCain’s interview today.
It includes the full interview. Here is the link:

KC’s question starts at about 2:56.
I also watched the full Obama video. They cut some stuff from that one also, making Obama look a little bad. She asked if there was some area that Obama felt weak on if it wasn’t national security. In the aired video, he never names anything. But in the full video he says “Health Science”, he isn’t a doctor or scientist.
