Obama gives a speech in Berlin and gets possibly two hundred thousand foreigners to wave tiny American flags. What's the take of the jingosphere? "If Obama could go to Germany and give a speech in English and be not only understood but well-received, why does he say we all need to learn another language?" quoth K-Lo. "Obama has yet to see a Berlin bounce," said someone named Amy Holmes barely half an hour after the speech ended. "[W]hat's the real reason for Obama's last-minute decision to snub the troops in Germany?," demanded the Weekly Standard's John McCormack. (He must be a terrorist!!!!1!!)
A prediction. Years from now -- decades from now -- the right will congratulate America for being such a great country as to elect Barack Obama president, and use its self-congratulation to pretend that the country has transcended its race problems. It will conveniently ignore that an older generation of conservative preferred power to hope; avarice to vision; and imperialism to decency. Why do I feel so confident in predicting this? Because the right did it once before.

There are few things written during the course of the 2008 presidential election that are more likely to be proven correct than this.
To them, ‘avarice’ and ‘vision’ are synonyms.
And yeah, they’ll be taking credit for Obama. And remembering how much they did for Global Warming.
(And there will be shrines to the Goracle, a mythic figure regarded as George Washington is today. Which will REALLY piss off the avaricious, since they’ll have missed out on their economic cut of wind and solar power. Heh.)
Amy Holmes? Is that the same woman who made an ass of herself on CNN during the primaries? The token African-American Republican women they had on?
Uuuh! Good grief! I was in Italy for two years with the Navy and was in a part of Naples, trying to find my way somewhere. Asked a younger woman (I was around 40, she was maybe 10 years younger) and she replied that her English wasn’t that good. She waited, looking off to the side, clearly expecting me to at least try to talk to her in Italian. Unfortunately, being in the Navy and on a ship most of the time, I really hadn’t learned much of the native language, so she didn’t appear terribly surprised, but probably pretty annoyed I couldn’t do it.
Yeah, it is good for Americans to learn foreign languages.
For those too lazy to click through to the link…
Forty years ago today, a madman from David Brooks’ America murdered our prophet. For a variety of reasons I obviously wish King had lived. But one of them is so we would have seen the right unmasked. Had King not been martyred, the right would treat him like it treats Jesse Jackson — as nothing more than a “hustler” or a “huckster.” You know, all those two-syllable words that are supposed to mean a different two-syllable word that starts with an N. It will forever be our responsibility to fight them, and it’s a responsibility we should relish, savor and enjoy on the way to victory.
If you never write another word, Spencer, you’ll always be remembered for this.
Er… how ? How is the right interpreting Obama’s speech only a couple of days after they were suggesting he was a cyborg ? Praise for the realism of the voice/lips sync software perhaps ?
