Good column from Tim Marchman about the soft offensive underbelly of the Tampa Bay Rays.
That’s all well and good, but based on their performances so far (without any adjustments for strength of past and remaining schedule, and I don’t know in which direction that cuts), the Rays would be projected to win 92.48 games, the Sox 93.33, and the Yanks 88.40. So the Sox probably should catch them, but they’re projected at less than a game ahead. The Yankees are projected at 4 games behind.
The difference between the teams really isn’t large enough to overcome the fact that they’ve played 106 or 108 games already, and the Rays are up by 2 and 4 games right now over each.
The Yanks have a hard schedule ahead. Lot of road games against winning teams. I’d bet that even with their torrid July and typically-stepped-up August they’d win 85 games.
Hey Batboy! 92-94.
