Via a very sweet Amanda Mattos, here’s the Kills performing "Getting Down," one of the highlights of Midnight Boom, the best rock record of 2008.

I think this is the best Kills album. I do think, though, that “Love is a Deserter” from No Wow is their best song. Whenever I hear that guitar cranking up at the beginning of it like it’s just waiting to be unwound into that killer staccato riff, my eyes glaze over. Same thing with Sleater-Kinney’s “What’s Mine Is Yours,” particularly when it hits that glacial, groaning transition. In Housekeeping, Marilynne Robinson describes a lake groaning like some kind of creature under ice – that’s what that part of the song sounds like to me.
