Am I misunderstanding here, or after a veteran at a town-hall event mentioned the need for a draft, following a moving discussion of the sort of veterans’ benefits he typically opposes, did John McCain just endorse a draft?
Maybe I shouldn’t have been so concerned about McCain’s ability to win this election after all. Though it’d be kind of hard to follow bin Laden to the gates of hell if he doesn’t want to go into Pakistan.

Well I just listened to his drivel and IMHO you’re almost right. Since he didn’t disagree with what she said; that without a draft there would be “no one to chase him [bin Laden] to the gates of hell”, McCain agrees that Bush has destroyed the military, and that without a draft our volunteer army will no longer be viable.
However my guess is that this will be spun as a need for increased military spending to expand our
mercenarycontractor based military via more contracts to Blackwater and their ilk. Showing once again that there are jobs that Americans won’t do.BTW I’ve been looking for those $50/hr lettuce picking jobs he mentioned once long ago. But they seem scarce in my neighborhood and he hasn’t responded to my requests for a referral to them.
McCain didn’t listen to a word she said, zone out the minute she started talking. He just used his standard line. He’ll get away with it again after he claims everyone took his words out of context.
In August of 2004 the Bush campaign allowed surrogates to go negative on Kerry while Bush stayed above the fray.
In July/August of 2008 McCain himself has had to climb into the gutter to go negative on Obama.
This is the equivalent of bringing in Rivera in the 6th inning of a WS G7.
The guy can’t go another 3 innings — McCain has shot his wad prior to St. Paul because of the constraints of pub. fin. McCain has moved some poll numbers, but it’s temporary. Mariano gets out of the jam in the 6th — now what?
After the conventions the Obama/Dem money advantage is going to be huge.
I’m still calling an 8-point plus Obama win.
