John McCain started the day as a presidential candidate slightly down in the polls. He’s had a rough couple of days, but the evaporation of his convention bounce and the early onset of disillusionment with Sarah Palin is nothing that 41 days of intense campaigning can’t rectify. McCain ended the day as, literally, a national joke. I think he’s done.
Really. This is one unforced error atop another. The McCain campaign is now suggesting suspending the Biden-Palin debate. It’s almost as if they think that compounding the initial mistake would wash the whole thing clean. Did McCain hire Bob Shrum and not tell anyone?
I’d qualify this statement, but not being a campaign reporter, I don’t really care about preserving a non-existent reputation. John McCain lost the election today. He looks erratic, panicked, utterly unable to assess a situation for what it is and mistaken about what his relationship to the electorate is. The only question at this point is how McCain rehabilitates his post-defeat reputation and continues in public life even as a fraction of the statesman he used to be.
Update: Jesse kills it.

aHAHAHAHAHAHA
bawk bawk bawk bawk!!
Palin wasn’t ready
So? And that will be when;)?
One thing I noticed is the McCain campaign made sure he got so sleep he was looking mighty haggard for a few days there he still looks like shit. I wonder if he’s going to make it till the election.
I think he’s done too. We’ll all look back on this election and realize today was when McCain definitively lost any chance at becoming president. Ok, he didn’t have much of a chance for the last week, but now it’s really, really over.
Insane’s going to use the time to read an econ 101 textbook, for his first-ever exposure to the topic
thanks spencer.
Now Johnny is saying Boobs Palin can’t make it to her debate either. Bah hahahahahahahaha! Hahahahahahaha! Oh gawd, too funny! Bah hahahahahahahaha!
I know that I should be serious today with all the financial mess but I can’t stop smiling. I don’t know when I have enjoyed a day so much. McC ducks and now wants Sarah sidelined – it’s just all too good.
Thank you. I am laughing with you…that’s great.
Hey Spencer!
I’m waiting for them to try and step into and through Omama. But given the Schmidt-Davis BS from earlier this week, if Obama can get him on the mat, he can squeeze the life out of TeamMcCain and we will watch them thrash about for the remaining weeks.
Now awaiting the next “McCain Hail-Mary” – Teddy Roosevelt masks, McCain promises to fully fund the Contras, something along those lines.
she has to take a pre-algebra refresher so that she can read the aforementioned Econ 101 text
so transparent
CNN all over McCain….hasn’t paid any attention…W trying to create a crisis
do you all recall all those little Republic congresscritters telling Cheney “No Deal!” yesterday ?
this may have had something to do with that:
Patrick Ruffini – Wanker Extraordinare
so in his stunt to regain some traction – McBluster is SCREWING his Party and taking away the one hope some of them had of ever seeing DC again
oh the inanity !
He did lose today, Spencer. It’s like the Dean Scream… Only a genuine scream of desperate fear, with Deans head stuck in the sand
KO on McCain campaign suspension
Not only do we have a candidate running on the emperor’s new clothes…we have a candidate and a VP candidate that are…
INVISIBLE!!!!!
Someone (last thread?) said that W’s nine oclock is past his bedtime. But it may have been prerecorded. I think I heard on TV that it was 13 minutes long. Would be about right for W to be sleeping thru it.
McCain-Palin — neither of us ready on Day One
I think that when Palin kissed the Godfather (Kissinger) (which should have happened in reverse) she stepped out of line and kiboshed the whole shebang.
McC really is lost. He’s plunging from one disaster to another and doesn’t seem to realize that the whole thing is on YouTube. I’m enjoying it on two threads right now. Can’t believe all that has happened today.
Invisible on day one.
Mighty Mouse McCain lookin’ more and more Andy Kaufman every day.
oh please Twain, I’m so geeked up on all the news, mr cbl is out in the garage right now looking for a spare tranquilizer dart
and I just saw the Laura Bush says Sarah aint ready link – dayum!
ROFL mr wobbs told me to settle down LOL
There’s plenty that scares me about Palin but the fact that she is completely out of her league & over her head yet confidently seems to believe she isn’t is really terrifying. No second thoughts in that head. I guess she’s “blessed” so she doesn’t need to worry about any competence.
Maybe suspending Sarah’s debate was the goal all along…delaying Obama-McCain first debate a way to push back hers?
McCain is finished in Public life. I doubt he will get re-elected as the Senator from AZ, and should retire back to his ranch in Sedona and snarl at trees.
God chose her.
ding ding ding
Gawd (rolling eyes) will place Palin in control on
SeptemberAugustSeptember 24on day One…the first day of theMcCainPalin Adminstration…Palin is clueless. I should buy her a few
I want Palin in control of a country in a Depression.
hope you’re right.
And that would be for Comedy? Or Tragedy?
Palin/McCain is Panic enough!!!
did you forget your snarky tag?
It’s looking like the McCane campaign is in such disarray that they would be incompetent to be that clever. They can’t think 5 minutes in advance.
How far do you think Bush will get in his 13 minute speech before he invokes 9/11? McCain managed to include it in his statement today about allegedly suspending his campaign.
CNN
Quick Vote
John McCain’s request to delay campaigning and this week’s debate is:
An effort to help the economy 24% 39416
A political gimmick 71% 115444
Something else 5% 8615
Total Votes: 163475
..nobody’s buying Insane’s stunt. I’m sure the 24% corresponds to shrub dead-ender crowd.
I say the first 25 seconds
ecahn;
Between God & Rev Wutthe giving her a shield against witchcraft, she’s covered.
Do I really need one???
/s
Katie Couric: Are we heading toward a great depression?
Sarah Palin: That’is the road America may find itself.
POP QUIZ-What do we call that road?
(Hint: The Road To ______)
I worked for a real political master for 12 years and his first rule was, “When you are losing, don’t let them vote.”
McDopie is using the same thought in a different situation…”We have no idea what bail-out policy the GOP (Wingnuts and honest-to-God conservatives and those terribly important independents …gotta satisfy ALL 3 or McDopie loses) will accept, so let’s not debate. In fact, suspend the campaign until we can get our act together!!! It’s in the national interest that we wait until the GOP can get its act together!!!”
Yeah, but I heard Posdesta (iirc) had said that this financial crisis was a financial 9/11 and where is John McCain? If the Ds do it (and they shouldn’t), then the Rs are home free.
so much for political leaders givin’ the people hope an’ all
13 seconds?
I think she’s the most holey candidate we’ve ever had.
Andrew Mullins, special assistant to University Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate television set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly five and half million dollars getting ready for the debate.
Mullins also noted that if the Commission on Presidential Debates asks the campus to hold the debate at a later date, he is not sure the university would be able to accommodate them.
”It’s huge. You cannot just say that you’re not going to do this thing,” Mullins said. ”I don’t have any idea whether we do the debate” at a later date. ”[We] probably wouldn’t do it.”
Now W inviting McC Ob, etc to White House to settle the problem….is he taking sides in the debate question? I didn’t hear when he wants to meet.
Now, “W” our savior, has “invited” McLame and Obama to the WH tomorrow (in lockstep with Rove’s suggestion of course)..
Obama should say. NO, I’m busy trying to fix your BS policies that have destroyed the United States of America.
Say NO Obama. Say No…you’re busy preparing for the debate where “W’s” candidate has no intention of appearing.
Say NO thank you W.
John McCain hates higher education
Not no but hell no.
makes no sense as the WH bailout has long been dead
Someone (last thread?) said that W’s nine oclock is past his bedtime.
guilty.
as usual. heh.
Wonder what fat fuck Haley Barbour has to say about it?
Breaking: McCain will announce that we will all wear our underwear on the outside to show the rest of the world that we are a clean nation.
Yea, try to read the next thread, it might even put you to sleep!
Cocktails to ya.
Per Kos poster dday:
McCain is going to solve the Economic Emergency….Mr. I know nothing about economics, is going to go back to Washington to save America.
Get me a gun, shoot me now..
Bwahahahahahaha
cont’d from dday
tahdah the talking points
nah.. he’s just there to protect the interests of his base – Wall Street execs.
Can you believe this? I thought I was shockproof!
I’m waiting for the friggin’ other boot to drop.
I know me too.
oh my gawd.
Obama will go to WH meeting per MSNBC.
So, John McCain has reportedly paid more than $5,500 to Tifanie White, the makeup artist who works on ”American Idol,” for similar cosmetic services. It is yet another incident of a politician — regardless of ideological stripe — coughing up a lot of money for the sake of good looks.
Huff Post
obama accepted the meeting tomorrow but that still leaves time to debate on Friday.
Get a refund!
lol
Is Limbaugh now going to refer to McCain-Palin as the first all female ticket?
McCain needs a surgeon not a make-up artist.
I am so glad you added that…I had not heard the 2nd part..
New Stirling post
How we got into economic crisis and what to do about the bailout. Y’all come on up.
A sturgeon, that’sa doctor that cut’s you open.
g marx
eg, I have to go to bed in an hour, I couldn’t even read that by then!
What’s odd is why now? The only panic today was coming from the McCain campaign.
Obama should say that any negotiations need to be made before Congress, in session. He should point out that this is the CONSTITUTIONAL mechanism for developing legislation, and that members of the Presidents OWN PARTY who oppose the current “historically unprecedented, and likely Unconstitutional, exchange of Congressional oversight and law-making authority to the Executive” must be debated in public, on the floors of Congress. “This is not something that should be concealed behind closed doors, between those who do not have the right or power to negotiate a deal. Too many issues are left unanswered…and the costs to the taxpayer to bail out some of the wealthiest corporations in the world are of a scale where any plan must involve MAJOR benefits to the average American.”
Gawd, I keep wondering what he looks like without the make-up…

ecahn@50:
Empty vessel.
Even if it was an effort to “help save the economy” some of those 24% might actually think it’s a misguided, stupid, and foolish effort. And I suspect “something else” could mean “he’s unprepared or scared”.
Pop Quiz:
Tifanie White puts lipstick on what?
(Hint- Crazy POW.)
He’s so pale. You can see right through his skin. I think Palin sucked all his blood out of him.
McCain was so bad today that tomorrow the stock market will crash again. It’s been waiting to see what happens in DC, but now that McCain is heading there, and he doesn’t even know how many houses he has, they’re going to know that we are completely fucked.
McCain’s response to the financial crisis is of far less significance to his chance of election than is the fact of the crisis itself. Americans will be fearful and angry and a financial bailout of Wall Street will alienate the middle of the country.
Great post, made even greater by the Velvets quote.
