While watching the Skins-Cowboys game, Yglesias reminds me about a bit of McCain retardery at risk of falling through the cracks. Attempting to upbraid Obama on Pakistan, McCain said at the debate:
I don’t think that Senator Obama understands that there was a failed state in Pakistan when Musharraf came to power. Everybody who was around then, and had been there, and knew about it knew that it was a failed state.
Pakistan is not, was not, and never has been a failed state. Not according to any remotely rigorous definition of "failed state." It most certainly was not a failed state when Musharraf pulled off his 1999 coup: to the contrary, that’s why it was a coup and not, say, a campaign by the Army to consolidate the government’s hold on the wild hinterlands of Pakistan. If nuclear-armed Pakistan ever becomes a failed state, I promise you, you’ll know. For McCain to snootily assert his superior knowledge of Pakistan based on such an obvious and inexplicable falsehood is laughable. Someone is lacing this man’s Gerber Peaches.

I’ve dug up some comments of McCain’s on Lexis from 1999 that seem to agree with Obama’s take on Pakistan back then.

Even discounting those, it’s almost impossible to find views outside of the Indian far right in 1999 of anyone that says Pakistan was a failed state.
He also misspoke the names of the leaders of both Pakistan and Iran.
Disqualifying gaffes, all, if your name is Barack Obama. But since McCain’s “wheelhouse” (starting to hate that term!) is foreign policy, TradMed forgives him these charming idiocies.
Grandpa McCain requires the strained peaches, not the todler variety. In his mind maybe Pakistan was/is a failed state because they haven’t nuked Iran (their next-door neighbor, right?) or India or both. Or something.
His degraded mental processes are no longer a subject of speculation, they are out front in his everyday persona and rote repeats of lines he’s been saying for decades. Poor John, dementia is now thy name.
I saw only one blogger making this observation at the time of the debates and it wasn’t him….
