If you haven’t read today’s NYT story about voter purging yet—you need to go ahead and do that.
I don’t have anything substantive to add to that really, but when I read it I couldn’t help but remember an interview I did Tuesday.
I had William Francis Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth (If Massachusetts wasn’t still clinging to colonial grandeur I wouldn’t mistype that all the time, I could just type Secretary of the State.) on the phone talking about voter registration. He had a bunch of ‘no comments’ for me: no projection for turnout in Nov (too early) no total for the number of new voters registered so far (didn’t count them yet)…and then I ask if they’ve got any new voter outreach campaigns in the works and what do I get?
I get a, “Yeah, we do. As a matter of fact, starting tomorrow (yesterday, now) you’ll be able to fill out a voter registration form at select Dunkin Donuts.”
Now, if you don’t live in Mass or spend a lot of time here you might not get how perfect that is, but there really are not enough synonyms for ubiquitous (omnipresent, everywhere, universal, hither and yon, pervasive…see I’m already running out) to describe the social phenomenon that is Dunkin Donuts in Mass. It’s the public common, a franchised (metastasized?) Agora, and absolutely the perfect place (in a dark comedy—have we come to this—sort of way) to register people to vote.
Cause, you know, there’s nothing really important at stake right? So why bother to go out of your way, register when you grab your 200 degree morning coffee.

I read that voter purging story via ABC and it all seemed pretty reasonable to me. If you don’t have a single system for presidential elections and have each state operating mostly by its own rules and sometimes under federal then this is the kind of shit that happens.
The one really disturbing revelation in the story was that it takes 10min to process a voter registration. That is beyond insane. What are you chipping stone tablets over there or something ?
