I’ve felt that some journalists/commentators have been a bit too over-sympathetic to our enemies in the past (particularly Muqtada al-Sadr), so I understand the resentment. But I disagree with Mr. West that Rosen was pushing Taliban ideology onto us heathens in the West. My impression of the Taliban was that they were terrorist thugs, and after reading Rosen’s lengthy piece, my impression was that they were incompetent thugs bitterly disputing one another. Besides, open source intelligence is a nice tool to have at your disposal. Questioning the legality of Rosen’s actions and publicly stating that there might need to be “a trial” is another beast entirely, and I completely disagree with Mr. West.

As for trying to lambaste Mullen and Gates…it kind of goes into “You Kids Get Off My Lawn” territory when he compares everything with WWII. The “moral clarity” argument doesn’t get to the heart of the problem with everyday America and GWOT. It’s not that people are sympathetic to our enemies, it’s that they are apathetic about it due to the small percentage of people directly involved.
