Remember how I wrote earlier this month that Gen. David Petraeus’ public statements appeared to implicitly back Barack Obama’s foreign policy? Here’s another example.
According to ABC, the incoming Centcom commander — who takes over at 10 a.m. today, as a matter of fact — wanted to make a visit to the Syrian government. Of course, the Bush administration considers Bashar al-Assad a junior-varsity member of the Axis of Evil. I don’t think we’ve had ambassadorial-level relations since 2005, when Bush recalled Amb. Margaret Scobey to protest Syria’s assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Yet Petraeus doesn’t think it’s crazy to discuss one’s problems with foreign leaders.
Petraeus proposed visiting Syria shortly after taking over as the top U.S. commander for the Middle East.
The idea was swiftly rejected by Bush administration officials at the White House, State Department and the Pentagon.
According to ABC, Petraeus believes the Syrians can be cleaved away from the Iranian sphere of influence, which would give the U.S. much more leverage in dealing with Iran. Instead, the Bush administration chose to keep relations frosty and to assassinate an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader across the border into Syria, an act that the Syrians understandably find to be an affront, coupled with a "warning" to the Syrians about "clean[ing] up the global threat that is in your back yard," in the words of one senior official. Now, it may be that killing Abu Ghadiya was the right thing to do. If so, the much more productive course would have been for Petraeus or another U.S. emissary to establish some path of outreach to smooth over rough U.S.-Syrian patches like this one.
The leak of this ABC story is important, too. This is just an inference, but the fact that such a move would become public on the eve of the election seems like a signal from Petraeus to the likely next commander-in-chief that the two of them can do business together.

And which Petraeus fully expects to be Obama. After all, is McCain going to do anything different from Bush? No!!
don’t think this was actually an ABC story. from glenn greenwald today: Someone should tell ABC News what “exclusive” means
glenn goes on to give other examples. abc is really quite bad about not giving proper credit and worse, about claiming an “exclusive” when the story has already been reported elsewhere.
Even Petraeus if scared of Palin as President. But, quite honestly, I won’t be at all surprised if she’s ultimately really “The One”.
Godfather Kissinger calls the shots.
“is”
I don’t think the General is honest he tells Bush we can still win and now he is trying to get next to Obama I think he is a yes man.
Bring back General Eric Shinseki! That would rub Bush’s nose in the dirt about the war and be a person America could trust.
Plus Rumsfeld, the Neocons and the Kagans hate him what better resume do you need than that.
Obama should personally ask the Eric back privately.
i don’t see how this is a message from petraeus if abc just stole the story from landis.
What can we do about it legally anything?
hopefully glenn embarrassed them enough that they will think twice next time. i’m glad they went with the story, they just should have given credit to landis. and claiming an exclusive story is way over the top.

I hope ABC is embarrassed too lots of Bloggers don’t get the pay ABC reporters do they should at the least get the credit.

What does this construction mean? How does a country assassinate someone, anyine? Who in particular committed this act? Were they under orders from someone, some organization, or what other motivation did they have?
