I have never been there but because it IS a part of this country IT must be repaired! It did get 12 DIggs azureblue… did you Digg It? Proposed Funds 23
Carper Vs Lieberman 34
We are Walking away 55

And this diary 18,

I spent a week in N.O. in the Summer of 2007 with a bunch of college kids who helped rebuild three homes. 4 of us old folks and 11 college kids. They took the lead, we supplied a little smarts and some direction. Great bunch of kids.

That said, while we were there working in the Upper 9th Ward and over in the 7th Ward north of 610, there were no government programs at work. None. If any were in progress, they wore suits and sat in offices. The only folks doing actual work, getting dirty, busting knuckles were Youth and College kids, and Faith-based groups.

Oh, there was some money floating around. Lot’s of contractors paying twice the normal price at the Home Depot in the Upper 9th ward, but real-live mobilized government programs? Nada.

This administration did to New Orleans what the Republicans in Congress want to do the the U.S. Auto industry - punish those who vote for Democrats.

The shells are clam shells most likely dredged from Lake Ponchartrain as fill/road material before approx mid-1990’s. People from my hometown that were fishermen participated in the hearings to stop the dredging because it was killing the life in the lake including the blue crabs that the country loves so much. I am happy to say the lake is doing much better now. Not perfect but much better.

Much of N.O. not so much.

Most probably because of this:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/.....0367_x.htm

The recovery money given to LA folks with damaged homes was based on pre-storm value of the home. I can think of real reasons to do it this way, but the effect ended up being that the poorer areas didn’t receive enough to rebuild. Thus the photos of Lower 9 and New Orleans East are much much worse than many other areas of the city. (I have anecdotal personal evidence that it may have enriched those that already were as well by compensating them more than their damage.)

Don’t be deceived though, there are still abandoned houses in every neighborhood of the city. Even the dry ones. Even the “rich ones”.

Anyone remember the hurricane to hit Texas not so long ago? Not an item in the news, yet I hear reports of the same lack of progress there.

The sea shells you mentioned could very well have been left by Katrina, but for decades small Louisiana roads were made of crushed sea shells. I remember how hard it was on bare feet walking on sea shell roads when I was a kid long ago. I didn’t see the sea shells you referred to, so I can’t make any sort of judgment about that. Suffice it to say there’s no shortage of sea shells on roads in South Louisiana.

Yep this NO stuff is so old news crap! Who wants to talk about it?? Certainly not Bush! But there are those who are doing more than just talking about it. For example Habitat for Humanity is still rebuilding homes! And many Churches are doing the same, our local church has a teen program that every summer the Teens go to New Orleans and help rebuild homes for a week! So there are some who care but certainly not enough to make the difference that needs to be made to bring back New Orleans to it’s former self!! It is truly sad and as I said just one more legacy of the Bush Administration and it’s proclivity of helping the rich and letting the poor fend for themselves!
