Age of Quarrel is the toughest NYHC record. I think there is an argument to be made that on a person to person level, “Malfunction” is a tougher song, but it doesn’t have the grandeur of “Street Justice”. It’s special because John Joseph is clearly furious and frustrated by being constantly pecked at (Pantera’s “Walk”), or betrayed (SOIA’s “Friends Like You”). He’s merely misunderstood in “Malfunction”, but that still pushes him over the edge (Underdog’s “Over the Edge” does not make this list.)

I think SOIA’s “Just Look Around” gets an honorable mention for a good depiction of the early-nineties Crown Heights racial tension. That song is effing tough.

Ah, the non-tyranny of distance. I definitely felt like an emo nerdario writing that post.

Speaking as one who was actually around in 1989, I must say that, back then, trying to fit Agnostic Front and the Cro-Mags into a theoretical/quantitative framework like the one above would’ve resulted in one either being heartily laughed at, or gently beaten up.
