Did anyone check out the 80s Hardcore show at Cakeshop on Friday? I want a full scene report. In the meantime, here’s a 1988 ABC-7 investigation into the city’s skinhead culture.
In my time I have befriended many a skinhead. Not only are they not all racists, they’re some of the most fervent anti-racists you’ll meet, as the racists make them look bad. Case in point: Brooklyn’s R.A.S.H. crew — Red and Anarchist Skinheads — who drove around in a van styled after the A-Team van, stocked filled with implements for beating down racists skins. Dan the Bread Truck Driver was once written up in something of a sexual scene report by one-time hookup Amy Sohn. Mostly I remember him lifting my up by my ankles when I was a teenager at a Distraught party in early-gentrification Williamsburg. Allegedly this was to demonstrate that I was his bro.

Yeah, I used to be friends with some SHARPs back in the 80s and 90s and they were seriously hardcore anti-racists. Nice guys and gals.
I see your surprising skinhead examples and raise you…

Online video down page.
There were more than a few black skins kicking around DC in the mid-80s – sadly the skins back then were mostly known for beating up punks and gays. The gang led by Lefty (a black woman) pretty much destroyed punk rock in DC for a few years through intimidation and violence at shows. Anti-racist doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not a violent shitbag.
