Yesterday I noted that some intelligence officials have legal concerns about being held to the Army Field Manual when they conduct interrogations. But a group of retired flag officers who met with President-elect Obama appear to have a fairly simple solution for how to conduct interrogations within the boundaries of the Geneva Conventions and accepted best-practices in eliciting information. From The Washington Post:

[Ret. Rear Adm. John] Hutson said the new administration should stick to what he called the "golden rule": "What would we want the enemy to inflict on us or not inflict on us?" Any deviation from norms such as the Geneva Conventions, he said, undermines the ability of the United States to insist on the proper treatment of any captured American soldiers and damages the standing of the United States around the world.

Hard to argue with that. And why would you want to?
