i got a hernia in high school while i was working at a record store. One night while I was eating fist-fulls of prescription pain meds, I was listening to Loveless at work and was totally amazed. I closed the store that night and left a sticky on the record cover for my friend that was opening the next morning that read “Brian, This is what it would sound like if God made a record!”
I had never listened to MBV back in the day. I went to the reunion show in Chicago, knowing little to nothing about the band. I was warned to bring ear plugs, and I bought a $10 pair of professional plugs from the indy record store around the corner.
I cannot recall at all what the band sounded like. There are no remnants of any songs in my head. No diferrentiating the two guitarists. No real memory of either’s voice. Just unbearably load noise. I kind of felt like a schmuck just standing there and getting my intenstines assaulted by low frequency blasts.
I really wanted to enjoy the show. Everyone I tell this too says I need to listen to their albums. Maybe someday…
See, I assumed that was a concert movie from their reunion shows, and thus watched the trailer on apple.com . I was pretty pissed.

My first MBV ‘Loveless’ experience involved Robitussin.
