Is it wrong to have, on some level, respect for just how gangster Rod Blagojevich is? Consider this, from page 44 of the complaint:
During the call, ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s wife can be heard in the background telling ROD BLAGOJEVICH to tell Deputy Governor A “to hold up that fucking Cubs shit. . . fuck them.” ROD BLAGOJEVICH asked Deputy Governor A what he thinks of his wife’s idea. Deputy Governor A stated that there is a part of what ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s wife said that he “agree[s] with.” Deputy Governor A told ROD BLAGOJEVICH that Tribune Owner will say that he does not have anything to do with the editorials, “but I would tell him, look, if you want to get your Cubs thing done get rid of this Tribune.”
And this, on page 60:
ROD BLAGOJEVICH indicated in the call that if he was appointed as Secretary of Health and Human Services by the President-elect, then ROD BLAGOJEVICH would appoint Senate Candidate 1 to the open Senate seat. HARRIS stated “we wanted our ask to be reasonable and rather than. . .make it look like some sort of selfish grab for a quid pro quo.” ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated that he needs to consider his family and that he is “financially” hurting. HARRIS said that they are considering what will help the “financial security” of the Blagojevich family and what will keep ROD BLAGOJEVICH “politically viable.” ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated, “I want to make money.”
And then, of course, on page 63, the fuck-you-pay-me:
ROD BLAGOJEVICH said that the consultants (Advisor B and another consultant are believed to be on the call at that time) are telling him that he has to “suck it up” for two years and do nothing and give this “motherfucker [the President-elect] his senator. Fuck him. For nothing? Fuck him.”

Maybe not respect, because he’s just too damn stupid. But I do agree with you in a sense–I guess I’m grateful for the straight-forward, in-your-face nature of the corruption, and for the great entertainment value. We’re all in his debt, I think.

It’s OK, the human race has always had an appreciation for the lowest common denominator: Cain, Marquis de Sade, Jesse James…whatever. There’s something attractive in the abject badness of the bad. Blago simply represents the darker side of the Chicago machine. Not all Chicago pols are corrupt (Obama appears not to be, even though he is a machine politician), but many of them are. Blago is just more blatant and less cautious than most. In part that reflects just how ingrained and accepted the culture of corruption is that he did not feel a need to hide it.
Could one say that the recorded conversations of the Blago domicile are the political equivalent of Plaxico Burress?

Either Blago gets a deal now or he talks the Dems and the GOP run the state like to competing mob family’s. Mike Royko once noted that Chicago Aldermen had a higher conviction rate than the local mob did.

Having lived in the city and environs for 67 years I agree that “machine politician” isn’t synonymous with “corrupt politician” and that everybody that opposes machine politics isn’t a pure minded goo-goo. I’ve long since stopped being shocked by these revelations but I am absolutely flabbergasted at the level of stupidity(assuming all this is true) the Governor has shown. Most of our crooks at least make an effort to make things look good.

I live in Chicago and Blago wasn’t a gangster. He was a poseur, an arrogant spoiled brat who helped destroy the state economy which his petty tantrums.
This is a guy who boasted about his “testicular virility” and obviously used profanity to play out his Mamet thug fantasy. He’s the Goofus side of Goofus and Gallant, Davey Hansen trying to act like Vick Mackey.
It’s wrong to lionize the behavior of such a self-aggrandizing, destructive, shallow person. It’s as bad as calling Bush’s swearing and antics “gangster” act – Blago is like the low watt Democratic version of W.
