Whiskey-snob Phoebe Connelly of the American Prospect couldn’t let my earlier praise of Johnnie Walker Blue go unremarked upon:

Spencer Ackerman

how dyou mean
phoebe connelly

i mean most actual scotch experts agree it’s wildly overpriced
you can spend way less
for much better
and i’ve had it
meh
it’s flashy
and v. status symbol-y
Spencer Ackerman

what is an "actual scotch expert"
phoebe connelly
12:41
but not really excellent, so to speak
hmm. bartenders i know in chi
the guy at the good liquor store I went to there
had a conversation about it with another scotch guy here in DC at some point
dunno, just word on the street stuff
i’ll see if i can find you some actual documentation on this
Sure enough, she did.

Personally, JW Blue is the only blended scotch whisky I will drink. It is excellent, but may be overpriced. (The two are not mutually exclusive.) The world’s best whisky expert, Michael Jackson, passed away last year.
PS. FYI. The word “whisky” is a shortened form of the Gaelic word usquebaugh, or “water of life,” i.e., aqua vitae. A very appropriate name!
She’s right. Paying $150+/bottle for a blended whiskey is bullshit, pure and simple.
(In most cases, paying $150+/bottle for a single malt is also bullshit.
That is so messed up!! Johnnie Walker isn’t bad. After all, it is a matter of personal preference. It’s not like you were praising the whiskey equivalent of Natty Light or The Beast(aka Milwaukee’s Best).
1) cobernicus, nothing personal, but you are a fucking poser who has never had (or apparently heard about) Campbeltown Loch. Which I grant is a reverse blend, but a blend nonetheless.
2) DM, there is a short list of singles for which I would gladly pay $150, but its length is not zero. If you can get me that Cadenhead’s Ardbeg 19 for $150 per, I will buy a case.
3) NA, of course JW isn’t bad. Even Red is drinkable. The issue is with the price. I can get Red and Black for pennies at the Costco. Once you start asking me for real money, you had better be golden. Is Blue? I doubt it.
4) Spencer, if you need Scotch advice, just ask.

FU too. What I said is that the only blend I drink is JW Blue. I never claimed it was the only one that existed. I will try Campbeltown Loch and drink a toast to your developing a personality.
BTW – If you go to whisky.com you can find Macallan The Royal Marriage blend at $2750 per 750 ml. So JWB is not close to being the most expensive blend.
You can get a Cadenhead’s Ardberg 14 for $130 or a 13 for $170 here.
c, you said, “will drink,” which implies trying all others and rejecting them. If I misunderstood, apologies. And do try CL — it’s good and well-priced in all age brackets.
And a 14 or 13 Cadenhead’s or a 17 or 1978 distillery Ardbeg is not the same as the 19-year Cadenhead’s from 1997 — also a 1978 distillation, but so much better, it hurt.
As for Macs, I like ‘em fine, but they are ever and always overpriced. And that no-age-statement cask-strength issue is simply punk. Bah, humbug.
Mayhaps I’m an uneducated yank, but serve me up some Bells or better yet some Famous Grouse and I’m set. I like a good cheap blended whisky.
I have had a good malt, but a friend got it, so I don’t properly know the name.
On the same vein as the water of life tangent, I have to point out that voda is Russian for water, so basically vodka “means” dear little water–which I find close enough to ‘water of life’ though without the cool Dune reference.
Yeah, I pride myself on being a cheap drunk. My favourite wine, nero d’avola, tends to be one of the cheapest types of wine and the best vodka is relatively cheap vodka from Poland, and Gosling’s Black Seal Rum the best rum about. And in my limited experience, Famous Grouse is the best blended whisky I’ve had.
I used to buy 99% pure ethanol in 55-gallon drums for around $400.
