So Catherine used Playlist to make a — er — playlist of her favorite songs of 2008. I figured I’d do the same. As it turns out, Playlist is extremely easy to use and fairly comprehensive.
Most of these songs you’ve heard me talk about before. "Last Day Of Magic" by the Kills is my pick for best song of 2008; "Black President" by Nas is my pick for most important. My favorite new Fucked Up song is actually "Black Albino Bones" but Playlist doesn’t have that and "No Epiphany" is great as well. The Lil’ Wayne version of "Whatever You Like" is so terrible that the first time I heard it I tweeted with glee that all this is-he-actually-a-genius crap can end, but now I hate it so much I can’t stop listening to it. "Straight Outta Southside" I actually straight-up love. "Plastic" is the best song on Portishead’s excellent record. "Casanova, Baby!" is a song I not only wish I could have written but I wish I could have heard as a teenager, which is what makes me think that Gaslight may have actually released a classic this year. Disfear, Re-Up, No Age — you know I love that stuff. (Tokyo Police Club I think is better-than-average, but truth be told I listened to them a lot this year.) The Metric song is from their forthcoming album, so it’s kind of a lie for me to put it on a 2008-centric playlist, but, you know, we’re looking forward to 2009 here.
