Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU, read the AP story about President-elect Obama possibly ordering the military to plan the closure of Guantanamo Bay as one of his first acts in office and emailed this to reporters:
"While the news from unnamed sources in the Obama transition team about the closing of Guantánamo is certainly welcome, what we need are specifics about the timeline for the shuttering of the military commissions and the release or charging of detainees who have been indefinitely held for years. Executive orders are an important first step. But we trust that President-elect Obama will provide a detailed plan for ending the Guantánamo military commissions, shutting down the Guantánamo military prison and ending President Bush’s legacy of indefinite detention. An executive order lacking such detail, especially after the transition team has had months to develop a comprehensive plan on an issue this important, would be insufficient. What we need is an executive order that is less about rhetoric and more about a detailed plan – and we’re hoping that that is what President-elect Obama has planned for January 20."

Sombody needs to pump their brakes. I swear I think its like people are flipping on Obama because for so long Bush just ignored them that they are taking it out on him. Why antagonize somebody who explicitly said yesterday he IS going to close the place down and has not announced through back channels that in the first week he is going to sign an order signifying that. One thing I am pretty certain of is that while many or even most of the people at GITMO might be innocent there is a high likely hood at least a few of them are not. And we might want to make sure we actually take the time to sit down and figure out how to do this right. Now mind you when Bush made rash decisions every body derided him for it, most times rightly so. So why is Obama being punished for actually being deliberate so he can get it right when most folks claim to have been looking for that for the last 8 years?
has not should be has now
Well Mr. Ackerman, did this clown Romero forget to mention what time on January 20 he had in mind, or is
he just being gracious?
