I could not be more confused now. Yesterday President-elect Obama says it’s "more difficult than I think a lot of people realize" to close Guantanamo Bay. Today the Center for Constitutional Rights gently refutes him. And now — and I’m not saying the two things are necessarily related — Lara Jakes Jordan of the AP reports:
Advisers to President-elect Barack Obama say one of his first duties in office will be to order the closing of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
That executive order is expected during Obama’s first week on the job — and possibly on his first day, according to two transition team advisers. Both spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Maybe the two statements aren’t so incompatible. You can order the military to plan for the closure even if it can’t — as Obama said yesterday to George Stephanopoulos — be fully shuttered in 100 days, for example.

It might be less confusing to wait a week or two.
The thing is that if I do that, people will will ask me why I’m ignoring that AP piece about shutting GTMO down…
People might have noticed that you’ve been hinting that you’re leaning towards thinking it might be a good idea to close it down.
You could mention that Obama really can’t order anything done quite yet and that figuring out his shit should come after he’s had a chance to eat.
What’s #2 to compliment this then and continue that ”bush repudiation” theme ?
If you could tell him what executive action to take and he’d do so, on day 1, what would it be ? Serious question.
This isn’t real reassuring….
Fuck me, that was quick.
Anyone wanna double check whether he’s still not gonna drill in ANWAR as well ?
Oh and from the same interview it seems we finally have Obama himself ruling out any prosecutions of Bush Admin officials for wiretapping, torture, etc….
One would think that’d rate a mention on all the blogs that’ve spent more than zero words calling for this over the past 8 years.
