Attackerlady drove me to work this morning and the first Beta Band record came on her iPod. Ah, that record — so good, while everything else that band recorded was so terminally wack. The CD compilation of the first three BB 7"s EPs was a freshman-year banger of mine, back when I used to take my cues from Simon Reynolds and The Wire magazine. Then it occurred to me that that record came out ten years ago and I wanted to throw up.

They were EPs, not 7″s, one of them a double 12″.
I got over feeling old at Gilman when I was 19. And felt old. I didn’t go there much, mind you — a few times did it.
I strenuously object to the categorization of Hot Shots II and Heroes to Zeroes as terminally wack. Their best songs could challenge some of the best songs on the EPs compilation.
Although, I got Clinic’s 3 EPs around the same time I got the Beta Band’s, and those two bands seem to have had a similar career arc, though Clinic is still together.
I stand by what I wrote.
