I didn’t watch the Bush valedictory. As it happens, I was at my gym, using one of the elliptical machines with the personal TV screens. I flipped to MSNBC, not mindful of the time, and then all of a sudden President Bush was on screen, mashed up, thanks to my iPod, with a Screeching Weasel song. The women using the machines next to mine shot me brief but clearly disdainful expressions. I changed the channel.
So I didn’t see the speech. Read it if you feel so inclined. It’s hard to remember, but in 2000 Bush’s campaign plane was called Accountability One. Nearly nine years later, his speech is about why he shouldn’t be judged by his disastrous results, but instead by what was in his heart. If there’s any real parting gift that George W. Bush has given conservatives, it’s that they can no longer use Jimmy Carter’s presidency as a laugh line. Carter never seriously argued that his presidency succeeded because only 3000 people died from terrorism on American soil while he was president. Indeed, the speech’s most inspiring stories are about people who persevered despite of his policies:
We see America’s character in Dr. Tony Recasner, a principal who opened a new charter school from the ruins of Hurricane Katrina… We’ve seen it in Staff Sergeant Aubrey McDade, who charged into an ambush in Iraq and rescued three of his fellow Marines.
Maybe Dave Weigel will have more to say about the speech. Even without seeing it, I kind of like the verdict delivered by this TPM reader:
Watching this speech reminds me of when I listened to my high school principal speak for the first time after I graduated. He still sounded crazy but no longer scared me.

There was an odd quality to the speech- the words were mostly consistent with the “history will see what a good boy am I” theme of his last days- but the tone was oddly plaintiff–and at one point he said “I may have made some mistakes but I was doin my best to make you safe”.
The fucker may have been “doin his best”. That’s the scary part.
The presidential wreckage you see before you is the best presidency GW Clusterfuck was capable of…imagine that!
Buh Bye Dickhead.
Tuesday can’t get here fast enough.
“in 2000 Bush’s campaign plane was called Accountability One”
Just the first clue that whatever Bush promised/said/declared, you could assume the opposite was true.
Only a few more days…..fingers crossed no disasters occur that would require current government action…
As I listened to Bush, it sounded to me like an abusive father addressing his kids at a sentencing hearing. Did I do everything right? Maybe not, but I did it for you. I was trying to protect you. I was trying to make you stronger. You’ll realize that someday.
Clusterfuck’s farewell address doesn’t compare favorably to Washington’s, or Eisenhower’s. Clusterfuck’s farewell address was actually all about HIM- not about the country…not strange.
Clusterfuck’s farewell address contained just enough of an apology to set the stage for pardons. When should we expect THAT shit storm. I figured this afternoon about 5 pm Eastern.
Bush seemed distracted…Perhaps he had other things on his mind.
;>)
darkblack-you are wicked indeed. But in a good way, not a dark evil Cheney way.
I noticed that the smirky, winky demeanor was exactly the same demeanor he had before he went on the air (it was in Fahrenheit 9/11) to announce war.
It was the strangest speech I’ve seen by him in a long time…kinda like “suckers…I know something you don’t know”….I’m not suggesting he has plans, I just saying that he gets all smug about stuff. He seemed too smug for comfort.
I want him gone.
The beauty of HDTV is MSNBC is not broadcast in HD. So you wouldn’t have had to watch him. The ancillary benefit is you never have to watch KO and CM circle j each other under the desk during a “news” event.
I still wanna know who he was smiling and smirking at to his right whenever he made some inane comment.
We’re gonna hafta set up a troll alert system whenever Lady Jane is on the teebee. They must follow the cockroaches, the big FL ones, out of the woodwork.
Hope we are told in advance when to turn on the boob tube to see pictures of the Cowboy President and his Fillie boarding AF-1 for the last time to get the hell out of Dodge. I’ve been saving some great tequila for that moment.
Kind of surprising that this farewell address wasn’t one of the great ones, isn’t it?
I’m probably paranoid, but I got the feeling he and his minions might still have something up their sleeves…they are leaving way to easily…if something happens down the road…I’d look their way first.
Bush’s principal defense is that no one can really believe that his Presidency was as corrupt, incompetent, and criminal as it was.
Jeff Gannon.
Exactly…but it was.
Let me rephrase that.

Shrub is lookin’ for a knobber?
Bush gave his final speech to a roomfull of people who were aching to give him a blow job. They are marked by a defective sexual attraction gene.
