The investment bankers have started reading Krugman in the past week since BO moved into Blair House. He pointed out that the banks were insolvent. Roubini said the same thing this morning — to the tune of a trillian and a half dollars under water. The crunch, as Paul points out, is admitting that the banks have to be temporarily nationalized, the debt and equity written off, and the companies restarted with some infusion of gov’t capital until the private lenders get their balls back. May take some time, but it’s going to happen.

Hugh, I don’t think they care at all. Their unpopularity was only an annoyance & not a problem unless it got in the way of what they wanted to do.

BTW the Dow lost 4% and closed below 8,000 at 7,949. This has more to do with weakness in bank stocks than anything to do with Obama’s Inauguration.
