Really too disgusting for words: ABC reports that two women have come forward to accuse the CIA’s Algeria station chief of raping them. (Via TPMmuckraker.) The Justice Dept. has an investigation open into this guy, and he’s innocent until proven guilty and all, but it’s extremely hard to imagine two Muslim women living in a country where rape carries such an awful social stigma making a frivolous accusation. Leon Panetta will have a ton of work to do.

Rape is too serious a crime, Spencer.
you’ve spent how long conplaining about the Bush administrations flouting of the presumption of innocence?
When I was a young man growing up in the South in the 1920’s, it was a terribly serious thing for a young woman to be raped, especially by a black man. But it turned out that near every time a white woman was found to be having sex with one of them there sex-cravin sons, it was a case of rape.
Reading through the whole story at ABC, there are apparently tapes that confirm elements of the accusations and point toward other potential problems in at least one other country where he was posted earlier.
He’s not in jail yet, because of the presumption of innocent until a trial says otherwise. But the mounting evidence is suggestive of a big, big problem for this guy, the CIA, and the US.
Consider this: Ambassadors do *not* order home CIA station chiefs without a damn good reason, and sufficient proof to back up their order, because they know the first thing that the folks in Langley are going to do is scream “What are you doing? You’re jeopardizing our operations here!” The only answer an ambassador can give that will stick is to say “I’m saving your asses by canning this guy myself, and here’s why . . . But if you’d prefer that I call the local constables, I’d be happy to do so.”
