The Washington Times reports that the Obama administration is sending a high-level delegation to Moscow to save access to a key air base for the Afghanistan war. Two weeks ago, the Russians basically bribed the Kyrgyzstan government to deny the U.S. use of its giant air base at Manas, a crucial hub for supplying troops in neighboring Afghanistan. Pentagon and State Dept. officials have been frantically calling the Kyrgyz government to get them to reverse the decision — and it appears the parliament is delaying a vote on kicking the U.S. out — but now a delegation led by Undersecretary of State Nick Burns and the White House’s Russia specialist, Michael McFaul, are on their way to Moscow to deal with the patron as well as the client.
U.S. officials said they still hoped to persuade both Kyrgyzstan and Russia that, even though there are alternatives to the Manas base, its continued use would be most beneficial to Afghanistan’s stability. They also said they were open to Russian ideas about how cooperation in Central Asia can contribute to a better U.S.-Russia relationship.
Expect horsetrading, in other words.

Ok, well I’m not one of those folks who thinks we should be in permanent conflict with the Russians.
But it certainly seems realistic to assume that before the end of the American presence in Afghanistan there is likely to be a political confrontation with the Russians. Whether it’s over NATO expansion, “missile defense”, their own actions in their “near abroad”, resources or a third nation, it’s almost a certainty that Obama and Medvedev will have some kind of an eyeball standoff in the course of Obama’s first term.
Doesn’t it seem kind of short-sighted to hand Russia the keys to the logistical access to our troops? I get it, there aren’t a lot of good alternatives, but handing them a hammer of this magnitude sure seems like a particularly bad one…
