Strangely enough, all we’re hearing is crickets, mostly. Both from right and left and middle viewpoints. Even just a year earlier and there would be shouting from the rooftops. Can it be, that everyone but everyone, has recognized this Iraq War as a disaster. And, that everyone but everyone, wants this disaster to just go away.

Someone is stealing the oil and making a lot of money. I wonder who could have the power to do that?

Well the obvious answer would be that’s the oil workers in conjunction with Iraqi gangs. As testified to in many, many articles on the smuggling of Iraqi oil.

But let me guess, somehow Dick Cheney with a rubber hose operating out of south-eastern Iraq is somehow more plausible.

They say that less oil is pumped per day now than before the invasion. What they don’t mention is that there are few working meters. Someone is stealing the oil and making a lot of money. I wonder who could have the power to do that? It was about control; remember that Cheney’s was soliciting bids for development of Iraq’s oil fields in March 2001.

Obama called Maliki, then Bush:

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Before announcing his plan for withdrawing troops from Iraq, President Obama made an intriguing courtesy call on Friday morning: to former president George W. Bush, who began the war that Obama has so vehemently opposed.

White House officials did not elaborate on the call, which Obama placed from a holding room at Camp Lejeune just moments before he gave his long-awaited speech. Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said Obama made the call “as a courtesy” to the former president.

Earlier in the day, aboard Air Force One, Obama called another interested party, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki. The Iraqi prime minister had already declared that he was unconcerned about the troop withdrawals, which will leave about 50,000 U.S. troops in place even after the bulk of the forces leave in August of 2010.

You’d have to have motorized patrols pretty much the length of the pipeline. Land mines, homemade or bought, would have to be used in open areas where there’s a deep kill zone. In hilly or mountainous terrain guerrillas could control the area.

NYT says Republicans like this plan; Pres Obama even cleared it with Bush. Dems not so happy, esp. Pelosi and Reid. Makes one wonder why P&R didn’t put their money where their mouths are beginning in 2006 when we won a majority?

Some of the pipelines were left unguarded and were attacked and destroyed
Not sure what size force it would have taken to protect the entire length and how vulnerable those doing the guarding would have been.
