I was walking to work today and thinking, "Why don’t rock groups beef like 50 Cent and Rick Ross?" This was apropos of me falling asleep after seeing Lil Wayne’s "Prom Queen" video, which has led me to think "Prom Queen" is actually Wayne’s backhanded complement to how lame and corny rock and roll is — through his eyes, it’s all whining about girls and being ignored and high school shit, even if it can be enjoyable — and it might be brilliant. But seriously: hardcore and punk bands used to clash all the time. Where’s the beef battles and drama of today?
Sure enough: Flaming Lips vs. Arcade Fire.

Hasn’t Oasis just about insulted everyone? I think Ryan Adams has as well.
But a better question is why should they?
Does insulting other people’s music make yours better? Maybe the democracy of having multiple band members makes feuding harder. Maybe they just think they’d rather play music. Maybe because their value as musicians doesn’t come from how “hard” they are. Hip hop has a much greater cult of personality aspect to it, and its based almost entirely around their perceived toughness. Hardcore punk has that need for toughness as well (otherwise you ain’t really hardcore).
In short, if your record sales are contingent on how tough the public thinks you are, then you will start more feuds.
yeah, where is all that stuff, Juice-boy?
I think you overstate how much hip-hop is based on perceived “toughness”. Sure alot of mainstream artists try to play up that aspect but the popularity of folks like Kanye West,Andre 3000,Common is not based on toughness. If as a hip-hop artist puts out garbage, it doesn’t matter how “tough” they seem, they’ll just be another sorry artist.
The Lil Wayne song reminds me of what Tarantino had in Kill bill about Superman:
Obviously, Lil Wayne may think it’s a backhanded compliment, but I’m not sure rock and roll should think of that way. Yep, probably thought about this too much.
There’s also Kanye and Miley Cyrus against Radiohead. That’s a pretty awesome feud.
