Say hi to Adm. James Stavridis, whom Defense Secretary Bob Gates just tapped to become NATO commander (or, for those who prefer formality, "Supreme Allied Commander-Europe," abbreviated to SACEUR). Stavridis is the Southern Command chief and widely known as a very capable and very ambitious officer. There’s never been a Naval officer at the helm of NATO before, so Stavridis has that new honor as well.

Really? The official acronym for the NATO commander is an obscure French word for ‘despoiler’. I’m not sure if I’m more surprised about that getting past our allies, the State Department, or the 108th Congress!
Maybe he’s just what is needed for NATO’s new anti-pirate navy (lol). “From the Halls of Montezuma to the horn of Africa”. Has the Navy perfected sand boats to get into the deserts of Sudan?
Supreme Allied Commander – Best title ever. Does anyone know one better?
