If Mickey Kaus actually believes what he writes here, he’ll publish every journalism-related email, letter, fax or notebook scribble he’s ever shared with another reporter to trade ideas. If he doesn’t do that, this pathetic has-been should shut the fuck up and find a way to get over his unbecoming obsession with Ezra Klein. Will Slate give a blog to Ray Benzino next?

Wow, a little testy there aren’t we Spencer?
Too close to the bone?
How about this, an open call to anyone who has ever received a journalism-related email, letter, fax or notebook scribble from Kaus should feel obligated to publish it now lest they make Mr. Kaus look like a fool.
What sort of a bone are you hunching over?
Look, all I am saying is that spence responded to a reasonable post with an eruption of profanity, ad hominum attacks, and straw-manning. Pretty much textbook display of insecurity in the face of a legitimate critique.
And insofar as I even understand what you are saying macaquerman, it seems to be a recurring theme here.
You’re right about the tone of his comments, but I think the point of the post is that he’s defending what he sees as a reasonable expectation of privacy.
The agreement that some comments are not to be published is one that evcery journalist uses, and abuse of it is not quite honorable.
Correct on his part or not, the theme you mention is a defense of ethical practice.
totally agree, I think that once the listserv exists, members surely have a reasonable expectation that things said there remain private.
However, clearly it is not the case that this right to privacy extends to the point where third parties cannot critique the existence of said listserv. Kaus didn’t reveal anything said inside, he just made the point that it’s pretty elitist and in his opinion against the spirit of the internet. And I think he further has a point on the TNR diarist issue, there are obvious potential problems arising out of this.
I haven’t seen too many of my favorite liberal bloggers respond directly to the charges he leveled (although I certainly would like to see what they are writing about it inside the listserv!) Maybe they are marshalling a common response, maybe not. The point is, the existence of that list now raises that question.
Why would anyone feed the Kaus troll with a response? Look what it got DeLong, a patented dose of Kaus glibness.
If Kaus doesn’t engage in any similar practices, then you and I agree as to his right to decry them.
I got a chuckle out of your line about marshaling a common response and if they actually do, I’ll tip my cap to you.
Have a good one.
Fair. And a good one to you.
Re “has-been” – when was he ever? Kaus is the same as he always was, which was never very much.
What? Kaus spends quite a bit of time criticising it on the basis that it’s bad for business (ie “echo chamber”) and nil on that.
It sounds fkn retarded to me. These people are bloggers. They’re already in the business of writing about what everyone else is writing about, but they want to organise that in private as well ?
Describe this in 2 words that aren’t “talking points”.
Background Research.
I think it’s all evidence of the right wing’s continuing propensity to have “man-crushes.”
Still blows goats
Now, now, spence, enough with the skull-f*cking already.
At least Kaus left TNR for a legitimate publication with real writers. You’ve fallen pretty far since leaving Martyland.
Lie and tell me you think “background research” is a more apt description than “talking points” for this…
