Notice the absence of the words "independent state" from this declaration of intent from Benjamin Netanyahu:
"I think that the Palestinians should understand that they have in our government a partner for peace, for security and for rapid development of the Palestinian economy," said Mr. Netanyahu.
He added that peace is a "common and enduring goal for all Israelis and Israeli governments, mine included. This means I will negotiate with the Palestinian Authority for peace."
President Obama said last night that "it is critical for us to advance a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in their own states with peace and security." There won’t be peace without independence.

And the Palestinians won’t (and shouldn’t) agree to independence without removal of Israeli settlements.
It will take more than George Mitchell to get these gaping differences resolved. Obama may have to give up part of the nice guy thing and discover that sometimes the POTUS must wield a stick around to make his point.
As soon as the Palestinians accept their Israeli overlords, that is peace.
It is kind of funny that Netanyahu will have a Lieberman in his cabinet, though it will be Barak, not Lieberman himself. Funny in a depressing rather than amusing way, anyway.
You have just won comment of the day.
The settlements should stay. Good houses and roads, plenty of water and stolen trees.
Awesome. I’m a winner at something other than middle school spelling bees and croquet.

That seems like a thoughtful and generous idea, one that the Palestinians would really appreciate, no doubt. Run it by the settlers and Avigdor Lieberman and see what they think, eh?
The only things that should be running by Lieberman are a thresher and a pack of dobermanns.
