Dafna Linzer at ProPublica has a fantastic find from her close reading of the CIA memos. What appears to be an inadvertent lack of redaction hints that CIA held a detainee called Hassan Ghul in one of its black-site secret prisons. He wasn’t sent to Guantanamo Bay along with the 14 other black-site detainees in 2006.
Since then, he has been considered a missing, or ghost detainee [6]. But in the heavily redacted OLC memo [7] dated May 30, 2005, government censors appeared to have missed a single reference to his name and confinement during a lengthy description of the interrogation techniques used against him. The reference can be found at the bottom of Page 7 in the memo [7], where Ghul’s surname is spelled "Gul." …
So it appears we now have evidence Ghul was in a CIA prison. Where he is today is still a mystery.

Good catch!
Probably long dead. More than 100 prisoners died in our custody.
More than 100 died, and yet we are to believe from the torture memos that no one in our custody is subjected to “severe” pain.
Boggles the mind. Must have been all that “good faith” reliance.
And immigrant deaths while in custody are coming along nicely, thank you.
Yupper. Hassan Ghul/Gul’s unredacted name is very likely the thread that unravels the sweater covering up those deaths.
Remember all the “mass graves were found in Iraq!” screaming from the right to justify Bush’s war? I wonder if we’ll be finding CIA ghost prisoner mass graves.
Was it an accident?
Or was it a clue, a gift, for those who might wish to pursue justice?
Just wonderin’.
Do we have a redaction treaty with Hell?
Just a rendition agreement.
I’ll settle for an extradition treaty, though the wait list is probably fairly long.
This was no “fail” – not when the wrangling over what and how much to redact was so prolonged.
All that’s required now are (1) a Congressman writing the CIA “Where is Hassan Ghul? Please provide, with specificity and in detail, all particulars on the following since his capture was announced by President Bush in 2004:
(a) his location on a day-by-day basis;
(b) the dates of his being present at said location(s);
(c) the means by which he arrived at said location(s);
(d) true copies of all records reflecting, in any way, any advise to or agreement with any foreign government relative to his being located or in custody in each such location;
(d) the dates of any interrogation(s), interview(s) or other contacts with officers or agents of the United States and/or person(s) whose presence was paid for by United States funds;
(e) true copies of all records, including but not limited to video, audio, text and/or other forms of recordings;
(f) whether he is alive or dead;
(g) if alive, his current location;
(h) if dead, (1) the date, place and cause of his death and whether said death was related, in any way, to any interrogation, interview or order (however expressed) from any United States officer or official, and
(2) the present location of his remains and how they were buried or otherwise disposed of, and the identities of all persons with knowledge thereof.
And, (2) FOIA requests to bombard the CIA and DoD asking the same things.
If we had him and do not account for him, that will be very very bad. Whether it is a gift or not, I hope this is indeed the thread that helps to unravel the bad knitting, Madame Lafarge.
A disappeared.
