Shorter ACLU: Go back and do that again.
Longer ACLU, from Jamil Dakwar, Director of the ACLU Human Rights Program:
"While we welcome the Obama administration’s commitment to upholding human rights at home and abroad, we are concerned that the first detailed list of human rights commitments to come from the new administration leaves out several key issues. In order to fully restore its position as a leader on human rights around the world, the U.S. must pledge to promote fair trial standards, end torture and arbitrary and indefinite detention and hold government officials accountable for violating U.S. and international human rights laws. The new administration has already taken steps to break with the Bush administration’s disastrous human rights policies but there is still much more to do, including the domestic implementation of human rights commitments and the creation of effective monitoring and enforcement mechanisms."

OT – but I’m too lazy to find the old post where this comment belongs.
Spencer, you’re right that Gen Lute (czar of messy wars at the NSC) is a “Bush holdover”. He’s also one side of a “DC power couple” that doesn’t get the media attention of SunPowers. Jane Lute is Janet Napolitano’s new Deputy. And she was the darling of the “responsiblity to protect” crowd and coinistas in the job she just left at the UN, bringing organization and crediblity to PKO. There was a lot of disappointment when she agreed to the DHS job. I don’t hear grumblings about Gen Lute’s performance at NSC. So I kinda doubt he’s going anywhere for awhile unless back to something specially arranged for him at DOD.
You don’t know how right you are. I was just talking to someone about this last night. Lute is in for the long haul. (Also, Jane Holl Lute is very close to Susan Rice.)
Good to know. Thanks for the update, Spencer!
