For all his talk about how he doesn’t care about opinion polls, Dick Cheney is narcissistically incapable of criticizing Barack Obama constructively, as Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote the other day. It evidently runs in the family. Here’s daughter Liz on MSNBC, accusing Eugene Robinson of hypocrisy:
"I haven’t seen similar columns from you or, frankly, anybody else saying things like Al Gore should go back to Tennessee and Al Gore somebody who is very vocal, very much out there," she said.
Funny thing about that. Dick Cheney has been calling Obama a threat to national security since he took office. Here’s how Al Gore responded after 9/11 to a Democratic audience:
Resurfacing before a partisan crowd, former Vice President Al Gore declared tonight that ”George W. Bush is my commander in chief” and implored Democrats and Republicans alike to offer Mr. Bush their unwavering support.
The Times described that September 30, 2001 appearance as Gore’s "first major political appearance since he lost the White House." Somehow, when Bush chose not to respond to, say, the U.S.S. Cole attack, Gore found a way not to accuse Bush of imperiling the nation, preferring such high-profile fora as teaching a journalism class at Columbia. Nor, after more Americans died from terrorism under Bush’s watch than under any other presidency, did Gore press a partisan attack. Because that would have proved he was a small man during a big moment. Strange how that works.

Why exactly does MSNBC keep having her on? She doesn’t know a damn thing about what happened but she speaks like she was in on all the meetings.
I remember seeing that clip of Gore on the Daily Show… as someone made partisan by the 2000 campaign circus, hearing that was one of the darkest moments of my life, words and cadence I’ve never forgotten. It drove me a little crazy, but luckily I was no threat to anyone but myself.
Cheney gives hope and comfort to a section of the population that is already counting its bullets; even though it clearly is an act of irrational self-interest on his part, I still praise it because it gives some indication to the wingnuts that they can have a peaceful role in American domestic policy.
I caught part of that this morning as I was trying to finish up some work, while having coffee and whatnot. I had to turn it off because of the particularly nasty combination of ’shrill’ and ‘flustered’. I like Eugene (I think he deserved his Pulitzer, many times over); but, he seems absolutely incapable of dealing with someone who has no compunction about lying through her teeth and/or disseminating as much non-sequitur and mis-information as the spineless hosts will allow her to spew. Needless to say, Eugene was the ‘flustered’ and Liz Chenney was the ’shrill.’
I have long held the belief that the Morning Joe show is MSNBC’s nod to the lizard brain viewing block which they must think wakes up, cold blooded, in the morning. Between Mika (somebody’s daughter) Whatserface, and Joe (I’d love to still be in congress if people would quit dying in my office) Scaramouche, it seems the MSNBC brain wizards think they have a morning weiner. Consequently, that spineless–or sympathetic–duo allow prevarication specialists like Ms. Cheney to spew her shrill nonsense in an unchecked and unquestioned manner. Poor Mr. Robinson is obviously too nonplussed at being confronted with someone who speaks such inveterate nonsense that he simply can’t compete with her moronic fillibuster of never ending insanity. It’s really too bad. I’ve seen Lawrence O’Donnell call out Pat Buchanan for lies and mis-truths on that same channel, so I know it can be done.
Like all of the others, Liz Cheney’s side of the debate was filled with mindless babble, and overused talking points.

Because no one else will talk publicly to defend Cheney anymore? Because they’ve all lawyered up?
You know you’re in trouble when you can only get immediate family to speak out for your views. I guess some people can only be counted on for a quick apology when they get shot in the face.
I like Robinson too. He’s too much of a gentleman to spank anyone, let alone spank them publicly.
Agreed, but doesn’t he remind you a little of ‘Floyd the Barber’ on the Andy Griffith show?
Who gives two sh*ts what Cheney’s daughter says. What makes her qualified to talk about this subject at all. More importantly, why does the traditional media keep giving her a platform to spew her nonsense? Just go away already.
P.S. Big Business admittedly is going to spare no expense to defeat Obama’s plan to end offshore tax havens:

AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Spencer Ackerman and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Time to give these crypto-Nazis what they’ve been wishin’ for, let’s have Holder coordinate with the Senate and House judiciary committees to hold public hearings on all the torture-related stuff and give the House Judiciary Committee the “OK” to ask for Cheney’s grand jury testimony in the Plamegate fiasco. At the end of the hearings, the committees can then forward a request to the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor and let the machinery of justice grind these evil bastards into fertilizer.
Have a couple a weeks of public hearings and then let the bastards swing in the wind while the country hauls itself out of the tub of shit these fascist monsters have left us in.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION AND REMEMBER THAT THIS WAR IS OURS AND NO ONE ELSE CAN END IT!!
Can I give you an Amen brother.
Heard Liz this morning, made me ill…
Thank you, MSM, for helping to spread the Cheney propaganda.
Thanks to the MSM and the word of the word in general, “torture” has lost its shock value. I think if anyone said “we saved thousands of lives with sadism” people would run for the hills.
One small diffence between Gore and Cheney is that after his tenure as VP, Gore won the Presidential election.
Not that Mika Colmes would have the wit or wisdom to point that out when discussing Gore’s standing to speak out on issues in 2001 in contrast to Cheney doing so in 2009.
“Dick Cheney is narcissistically incapable of criticizing Barack Obama constructively.”
This is the correct way to look at Cheney. Unless we try to understand what makes him “tick,” we’ll guarantee that the damage he caused to this country will reoccur.
He clearly misses being president, unlike junior, who most likely spends his days playing video games. Dick is still hooked on power, and hooked on manipulating information to his own advantage.
I’d like to read more about Cheney’s particular brand of psychosis, mainly so we can prevent it from spreading.
Perhaps right…but just remember that one of the approved methods was to place insects that were thought to be dangerous, but which were not, on detainees. Thus they could put a “caterpillar or similar harmless insect” that the detainee might fear (for example, a destinged scorpion) onto the body of a detainee, specifically while they* were trapped in a small box to limit mobility. You see they didn’t want the detainee to be able to brush away or kill the insect.
Yoo approved this method in August, likely with the permission of Cheney.
Either later thant month of perhaps early in September the only reported case of using insects in an interrogation reportedly occurred. Could the timing be coincidental?
Insects were placed on the bodies of Khalid Sheik Mohammeds two children, aged 7 and 9 years old. Perhaps these were caterpillars or other harmless (destinged) insects.
Kidnapping and torturing children.
* It’s not clear if the discussion of how the insects were to be applied related to the detainees being in a box to prevent movement, or the detainee, or both? One possibility is that the insects were to be placed in a box or mask placed around the head of the detainee…a la Orwell’s “1984″.
dick cheney ORDERED torture. al gore did not order global warming. try telling that to a republitard.
Another difference between them is the world-changing devices that both took credit for introducing.
Gore took credit for the internet-ew “information” technology.; maybe Cheney’s gonna take credit for electrical prods on genitals, or something- new “extracting information” technology.
Lately, I’ve wondered if Dick ever indulged himself in Romanesque fantasies back in the day. If he ever daydreamed about humbly making his way through the adoring citizenry while his heterosexual daughters dropped petals at his feet? I hope so, because as much as it must suck for him, to him right now, that might make it just a little worse. He’s coming unglued but I worry he’ll pull a Ken Lay before his humiliation is complete. I hope that doesn’t make me sound small.
la la liz–what irked me off with her appearance is that msnbc didn’t post her ‘official’ title…and didn’t post any at all until the end of her first segment–’former state department official’….until that point, she was just there defending her daddy, like any other daughter, no other reason at all. nope, she’s not a gop talking head, just dick’s daughter, and she’s got the skinny on what her dad thinks and says. then mika chimes in about what must be discussed around their ‘dinner table’ like her family….i am so sick to death of that stupid, dimwitted woman.
and she once again did the ’stick my titties out’ this is my turf, twit behavior that she does every time there is a woman at the table…oh, it gags.
and then mika continuing the ‘i have so much in common with famous people!!’ rants she’s been on..this time with liz cheney, we both had car wrecks in georgetown when we were teenagers and our daddies had to bail us out of it!!!!!..recently it was with maria shriver…just give her a bottle of bubbles to keep her busy.
and joe calling in starting it all off, to offer his ‘fair and balanced’ take on it all. and mika once again doing her best ’stockholm’s syndrome’ chick act when joe is in the air. there’s definitely some unfulfilled thang goin on there.
and robinson knows the best thing sometimes is to not validate the twit spinning the yarn. he’s pretty good at that and still getting his own points out there. ol’ liz knew he was dismissing her as irrelevant. that’s why she threw that stuff in at the end, to bait him. big mistake, said more than she intended because of it. she ‘let her slip show’. and he didn’t bite.
I seem to remember reading recently that (at least one of) the purposes of torturing was to find out their primal fear (like the fear of a bug), so that could then be used to really really get at them — as if simple torturing wasn’t enough.
The Nazis and Soviets had nothing on the Bushies.
We all have our “small” moments. It’s human nature I suppose. Trouble is, some people don’t seem to realize it and confuse it with being bold or patriotic or something else. I wonder what Obama’s “small” tendency might be. So far he’s handled himself pretty well.
