Ta-Nehisi Coates gets mugged by reality. Of course Marvel was always going to bring back Steve Rogers. When they brought back Bucky to be the "Winter Soldier" — and what fucking Soviet agent would ever use that codename? — the cardinal rule ("Only Bucky Stays Dead") was violated. This can hardly come as a surprise. For years, we’ve had indications of the character of this regime, and if it took this latest disgrace for wooly-headed liberals to recognize its true face, well, better late than never.

For a split second, I thought you were quoting Atlantic City. But, alas, you weren’t.
I’ll say here what I said at TNC’s–I agree with this complaint in theory, but Ed Brubaker’s Cap run is the best the character has ever seen and is virtually unequalled in contemporary superhero books, so he gets a lot of latitude for this storyline as far as I’m concerned.
I have mixed feelings here! On the one hand, yes, Brubaker’s Cap stuff is the best the character has ever seen. On the other hand, Captain America is a shitty character that’s extremely hard to write without making overbroad commentary about America. The Winter Soldier is no exception. And yet I like what I’ve read!
That’s all that matters, then, right?
