I just conducted the first English-language-news-outlet interview with leading Iranian dissident and human-rights activist Akbar Ganji since the Iranian uprising began. It’s here, at the Washington Independent. A highlight:
What does Ganji think of President Obama’s statements about Iran? “From my perspective, Obama has so far said he won’t meddle in Iran’s internal situation, and that’s a good, good approach,” Ganji said, but he added, “He cannot stay silent on human rights issues.” Clearly, Ganji thinks the Obama administration isn’t striking the right balance between non-intervention and humanitarian concerns. But that’s not to say that more active American support is welcome…

wow. that is HUGE Spencer ! mad props to you, hope it spreads far and wide
Awesome interview – kudos to you Spencer
Great post, I’m sending it out far and wide.
An election is stolen in the US, documented and the people essentially roll over for the corporate elite and their chosen lapdog.
Iranians who live in a rather oppressive environment seem to have no problem in expressing their outrage in public demonstrations.
The government will fall. There is no way that it can not with so many people in the street.
We need to learn a few things from the Iranians.
The NeoClowns who are all calling for intervention in Iran have seen this Bwahaha! Not that I expect them to listen but the failure of their interventions Iraq, Afghanistan suggest that what ever they do we do the opposite.
In every country where America has intervened on the side of Death squads and torture American support is the kiss of death.
I’m sure some of our brilliant firepups will find something to moan about on this too.
The hard liners want America to intervene the same way Darth wants another terrorist attack
If you Strive for the Moon you are never satisfied I admit what we have now is great but it can be better.
Still this is good news despite the NeoClowns Obama is handling this right.
You’re my horse if you never win a race!
Fox News commentors complaining about election fraud Cognitive Dissonance anyone:)
We really can learn from them. In our 2000 election, it took a lot to decide the winner.
The Iranians were able to decide this without even waiting to count the votes.
Don’t Gamble unless you can afford to lose and stop:)
Anyway That brings up an interesting topic when should we be happy with what we got and take the deal?
I think any deal made now with Al Franken not in the Senate is not the best deal we could have but still laws do have to get passed.
But even with Al what can we get passed when should we be satisfied?
What are they unhappy about exactly? I trust what I learn here more than the News with their experts how many army experts bribed by Rummy are still on the MSM’s payrolls?
We can’t understand this until we really know what both sides want, why they want it and what are they likely to do to get it.
Really something that the Iranian protesters are getting far far more coverage than the tens of thousands of folks (I was one of them) who protested the selection of Bush in 200O in D.C. and across the nation. The MSM is covering the Iranian protesters far more than those hundreds of thousands of American protesters (I was at 6 different anti invasion marches) millions accumulatively.
What fucking hypocrisy that people like George Will, etc were criticizing American protesters and the MSM was ignoring or demonizing American protesters and now the Iranian protesters are so brave, wonderful etc etc. Ignore or demonzie American protesters Celebrate Iraninan protesters.. Talk about double standards…talk about control of the media.
So many unsubstantiated claims being repeated about Iran that it is tough to keep up.
I heard Rachel Maddow repeat the main line rhetoric about just what Ahmadenejad has allegedly said about Israel I almost choke when Rachel repeated the neocons lines. She needs to spend more time at Professor Juan Cole’s place reading the direct translations instead of the neocons lines about Iran
What was it that Maddow said that Ahmadinejad had said?
Was it that remark where he said that there were no homosexuals in Iran?
Just heard Senator Chambliss say that there should be a recount in Iran. What an outrageous contradiction all of these Republicans saying how great the Iranian protestors are how there should be a recount yada yada where were these Republicans during 2000 selection of a President. They sure were not out calling for a recount then.
Rep Pence is all song and dance about the Iranian election…talking up the protestors a recount. Where were these guys back in 2000? Where was the media coverage during U.S. protests? The MSM is covering Iranian protest 24/7. What the hell is going on?
Spencer Flynnt Leverett was on C-Spans Washington Journal the other morning. He was great…says “get over it”
Same words the Republicans were using in 2000 during the Bush selection
It was the one that the right wing warmongers like (Ledeen, Kristol, Liebermann, etc spin) You know the one “Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map” instead of the direct translation “Zionism will vanish from the pages of history”
That lie that has been endlessly repeated that last five years
Didn’t Cole say that what the little guy did say was that the ” …occupation regime over Jerusalem… (should),,,,vanish from the page of time” ?
Other than the mistranslation that Cole is trying to correct, I can see how someone might think that Ahmadinejad is calling for the destruction of Israel based on that statement. Can’t you?
You and your tribe are quite capable of twisting someone’s clear message into whatever it is you want it to mean, so why ask your stupid question?
And which tribe is that, Charming Billy?
Efficiency eh? Heh.
I’ll bet they make the trains run on time too.
Were you brought up to like it in a pie, Charming Billy?
