Asawin Suebsaeng has an amazing post at TAPPED about something I should have caught: a new U.N. report finds that almost half of the current refugee population under the U.N.’s care consists of people displaced because of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. According to the report:

Afghan and Iraqi refugees account for almost half of all refugees under UNHCR’s responsibility worldwide. One out of four refugees in the world is from Afghanistan (2.8 million) and Afghans are located in 69 different asylum countries. Iraqis are the second largest refugee group, with 1.9 million having sought refuge mainly in neighbouring countries.

This is a testament to American failures and a signal call for American responsibility. Secretary Clinton said this yesterday:

In the coming months, we will continue our efforts to end urgent refugee crises, such as those in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Chad, the Central African Republic, and Darfur.

Not that it comforts a single refugee, but at least the current administration acknowledges the refugee crisis created by the two U.S. wars, unlike its predecessor.
