So tweets @TehranBureau, a fascinating source of Iran-opposition news. The New York Times reports that the Revolutionary Guards are vowing to inflict even more violence if the protests don’t end, despite the Guardian Council’s admission that 50 cities cast more ballots than had registered voters.
Some more @TehranBureau updates:
regime blaming all on terrorists backed by west, MEK [Mujahideen e-Khalq, a terrorist group formerly backed by Saddam Hussein]
the rest of the world can help by continuing to spread the word
national tv showed scenes of saturday – only scenes of protestors attacking security forces
their line (regime) is that protestors terrorists funded by west and holligans [sic -- it's a tweet, c'mon. You've never mistyped on Twitter?]
mousavi’s popularity has soared since his response to khamenei on Friday
I’ll keep watching, but so far, @TehranBureau hasn’t called for the U.S. to openly side with the opposition. His recommendations — "let the regime know the world is watching" — are pretty in line with what President Obama has been saying, regardless of the Sunday-show bluster that dismisses concern for the Iranian opposition’s desires.

Thanks for the update Spencer
Same here, Spence. The Iranian reformers have expressly asked President Obama to stay the hell out of it, as they don’t want the Guardian Council to start waving around Obama’s words as “proof” that the US is behind the reformers’ movement. Yet amoral jerks like McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Pete Hoekstra don’t care how much damage their words do to the people they say they’re trying to help.
Even Scarborough is calling McCain and Graham nutcases.
Let us not forget Mike Pence. He makes me want to vomit. All of these clowns do not care what happens to the protestors. All they care about is their rethug ratings. Party First!
John McShame now wants the US Navy to board that NK vessel it is tracking. To heck with what the UN procedures are. To heck with what the lunatics in NK might do to their neighbors. McShame should be renditioned to NK.
Even George-flipping-Will and Peggy Noonan are calling them nutcases!
Spencer, here’s Reuters reporting Russia’s view.

Please see fourth para.
We need to parachute some Wolverines into Iran and satellite link them up to Field Marshall Krauthammer for directives.

MSNBC is now reporting that a majority of the Iranian Council of Experts is calling for the annulment of the election.
I remember watching Tieneman live on CNN. I was home from college for the summer so I had nothing better to do than to stay up all night watching.
I’m afraid we’ll see something like that again — but I’m hopeful we’ll see a more positive outcome.
I’m sure Mousavi won’t suddenly mean the U.S. and Iran will be BFF’s but I see more democracy as always a long-term good.
That would be amazing.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Ackerman and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Thank you for the report Brother Spencer, the history unfoldin’ in Tehran now may tell us a lot about the science of the past, and we must be careful about speculation and expectations because the split in the rulin’ elite in Iran may NOT be a split between the bad guys and the good guys. It seems to me that the split between the opposition led by former Prime Minister Raffy and the government of the dimestore mullahs may, in fact, be more like the split we saw in our fascist party this last election cycle: a split between the corporatists and the religious lunatics. And remember that the Reagan administration and the CIA had a pretty tight relationship with Raffy and the mullahs in the early 80’s.
Let’s see if the mullahs learned anything from their success in 1979, if we start seein’ funeral processions of tens of thousands then I will believe that there is gunna be change sooner rather than later…and that the people of Iran will have enough blood and bone in the fight to carry real change into the institutions. The real question is whether or not this conflict will result in any change in the ruling structure of the Shia.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION AND REMEMBER THAT THE CURE FOR A SICK DEMOCRACY IS MORE DEMOCRACY!!
Grover Norquist would solve all the problems in Iran, by abolishing the capital gains tax, in America.
That would make a great Onion article about how Republicans propose new tax cut to support Iranian protesters.
It actually wouldn’t take more than two or three Special Forces Commands with some money to get radio transmiiters to satellites up to topple that whole ugly regime.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen DLoerke:
“It actually wouldn’t take more than two or three Special Forces Commandos with some money to get radio tansmitters to satellites up to topple that whole ugly regime.”
Whatever it is that you’vre been smokin’ there Citizen DL induces some SERIOUS stupidity…of course the millions of ignorant, filthy citizens of Iran don’t have the chops to hook up satellite links to bring down their government but a couple of our best and brightest Aryan troopers could accomplish the feat in a heartbeat!! THAT,citizen is some serious stupidity you dropped on us.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, AND DON’T FUCK WITH WHAT YA CAN’T UNDERSTAND!!
Lotsa armchair warriors here lately, bro.
why write with fake accents, Flamethrower? You are TYPING. “gunna”, “unfoldin’” “smokin’” “dimestore mullahs”, “raffy” – that’s just offensive and silly. Stop grandstanding and just go read JuanCole.com — learn a bit about the real power struggle & the clerics of the quietist tradition in Qom (guest editorial by Lyons on 6/19).
geeesh.. so in other words, if Insane somehow defeated Obama in ‘08, we’d be going to war with a country with an 8 million member military? Everybody else is being circumspect here.
omigosh, that is funny!
spencer, thank you for the updates. much appreciated.
Erasmus, I think I’ve seen your name before, so you are a seasoned enough Lake visitor to know Norske is cherished for his distinctive voice. When we have millions of people protesting for those rights, let’s please not silence anyone else’s! peace.
Spencer, keep up the good work and next thing ya know FDL will be holding a pledge drive to get you $100K (as they did for Emptywheel).
[ Note: The ‘ya’ is ‘offensive and silly’, just for Erasmus. ]
Gotta remember this is a foul-mouthed fem-blog full of DFHs and we’ve got a reputation to maintain.
