My Iranians friends say no one under 25 is accepting of any compromise that leaves Ahmadinejad in power, and that rejection has worried the clerics who view it as a threat to the Islamic state. They also view the young ones desire for pure democracy and heavy use of technology as a threat to the Islamic state, so they confront a lesser of two evils decision. Keep Ahmady and risk a simmering constant-coup threat or ditch him and try to hold on to power through the faux-democratic system now in place (and pretty thoroughly discredited). Tough spot they’ve put themselves in, eh? This would’ve worked out better if the opposition had been awarded their win and Iranian diplomats were enjoying 4th of July fireworks with the Americans this weekend.
