Building on this post, this is one hell of a quote in today’s WP:
"It’s an insane dream to expect anything different from the Pakistani government," said Ali Wazir, a South Waziristan native and a politician with the secular Awami National Party. "The Taliban are the brainchildren of the Pakistan army for the last 30 years. They are their own people. Could you kill your own brother?"

“It’s an insane dream to expect something different from the American government,” said 1990s Endymion. “Al-Qaeda’s been the brainchild of the CIA for decades…”
Ali Wazir’s statement is notable for both it’s obviousness and it’s “telling truth to power” quality. We’ve known this for decades, and it’s only the unwillingness of the American politicians, pundits and press to actually SAY it out loud that makes it noteworthy. Pakistan is the master of the “talk a good game and do JUST enough to keep the aid flowing” school of American Ally-dom.
If there was more discussion of both the complex and intimate relationship between the Pakistani military and intelligence arms and the regional Islamist community; and Pakistan’s strategic posture in the region as it is opposed to the American posture, the American people would be able to do a better job of evaluating both the utility and the necessity of the American military presence in South Asia…
