I didn’t want to write this at all, at all, at all, but Allen Barra: you need to stop. It’s a thin line between counterintuitive and stupid as a general rule; and it’s a really thin line in this particular case between counterintuitive and parochial. It’s not that Jeter isn’t having a great year (though we really have no choice now but to be suspicious of all late-career surges), it’s that Mauer is having an amazing one. Luckily Robert Farley writes the post that I didn’t want to write but felt compelled to write, so I no longer feel compelled.

Jeter’s having a great year, but as a Yankees fan I’d push for Mark Texeira for getting the MVP over Jeter if anyone is going to take it from Mauer.
Jeter is about to pass Lou Gehrig for all-time Yankees hit leader. He has been on teams that won the World Series four times. He was the 2000 World Series MVP. He is a likely first-ballot Hall of Famer. Winning a season MVP for the sake of it and not out of the production of that year would be silly. The MLB isn’t Hollywood.
Texeria isn’t even 1st team AL East. Mauer is so far ahead of all position players that the only real competition should come from Zack Greinke.
Nope. They can’t risk waiting another year.
Derek Jeter, MVP, Lifetime Achievement Category.
It’s now or never. Betcha it’s now…
