Colin Cramphorn, a policeman who served with distinction in Northern Ireland among many other places, observed that while every location is different, all are nonetheless connected. He realised not only that local knowledge is critical, but that the fate of one location often depends on the destiny of another. This insight was almost John Donnesque, akin to his observation that “no man is an island”. It is a key insight for our security: no problem can be viewed in isolation.

Hey, wait a minute!!! I thought this was the guy Republicans were pinning their 2012 hopes on. He’s going to replace ACORN as the wingers Public Enemy # 1 if he keeps up talk like this!! Not to mention the “Going Galt” types.

Interdependency would seem a thin reed to hang a 2012 GOP presidential candidacy on, given the party’s staunchly pro-YOYO philosophy. But maybe this general can lead them back from the brink?
He ain’t running for president in 2012. (Steve: the check is in the mail.)
The poetry spouting general says that Afghanistan is hard. It is hard all the time. But it can be done.
Not his coy mistress, then.
I didn’t think he would, but that won’t stop some Republicans from hoping.
