U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq confirms that at least one person from the U.N.’s assistance mission in Afghanistan has resigned in solidarity with sacked U.S. Amb. Peter Galbraith, who sought to get UNAMA, as it’s called, to take a harder line on election fraud in Afghanistan. I’ve heard credible rumors that there are more resignations on the way but do not yet have confirmation. Read all about it at the Washington Independent.

Update: Galbraith didn’t like a quote that Haq gave me, in which he said Galbraith’s firing "takes the focus away" from election fraud. Galbraith, who called the statement "absurd," emailed me:

“The UN created the ‘Galbraith fiasco’ by firing me at this time. Inevitably people were going to ask why. And Abdullah’s strong comments came before my letter leaked and before I spoke to the media.”
