Your guest-host for this game’s thread is Michael Cohen of the New America Foundation and Democracy Arsenal, proof that the man is possessed of a certain magnanimity. He opted not to pick a soundtrack for today’s game, and from what I know about the dude’s taste in music, that’s just as well…

Spencer is a Yankees fan; I’m a Red Sox fan. So as you can imagine when it comes to baseball we don’t agree on much. But I would imagine if there is one area of consensus it’s that the epic Sox/Yanks rivalry of 2003-2004 provided some of the best baseball moments of our lives. [Ed. note: Yes, absolutely, unquestionably.] Let’s face it, Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, aside from being one of the worst nights of my life, was probably the best baseball game I’ve ever seen. [Ed. note: PREACH] Of course, Game 4 and Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS weren’t bad either.  [Ed. note: Well...]

Maybe it’s just because I live in New York, but it sort of feels like we’re on a collision course for a reprise of those epic days. But first things first: there is the little matter of the Division Series. While I love the Twins’ story, that team just has no business beating the 2009 Yankees. And it ain’t going to happen. And if past history is any indication, the Angels dont have much hope to get past the Sox. The Angels have lost 12 of their last 13 postseason games against the Red Sox, including 9 of 10 over the last three series.

So I guess the question is: will this year be different? I will say this, the Angels’ offense is fearsome. Kendry Morales is a monster, Bobby Abreu had maybe the most underrated season in baseball and Erick Aybar just got better and better as the season went on. Throw in Chone Figgins, Mike Napoli and Howie Kendrick and you probably have the best Angels offense since they won the series in 2002. (BTW, when it comes to epic collapses why do the 2002 Giants never get mentioned? They were leading 5-0 in the 7th inning of Game 6; eight outs from a World Series win; and Scott Spiezio — I repeat, Scott Spiezio — did the damage.)

But that best offense also strikes out a ton, which is one of the reasons you got to favor Boston and those power arms of Lester and Beckett — not to mention what is probably the best bullpen in the playoffs. (Although how good was that Dodgers pen last night? Kudos to Torre for taking out Wolf when he did. He outmanaged "genius" Tony La Russa who left Carpenter in too long. Damn was he hittable last night). The Angels bullpen is "meh." Did you really want to go to war with Brian Fuentes?  And as good as the Angels offense has been the Red Sox might actually be better, especially with the mid-season addition of Vmart. Plus they own John Lackey. Oh and there is that whole hex thing. This team chokes more in the playoffs against the Sox then A-Rod does with men on base. [Ed. note: Ahem.] If you’re the Angels, isn’t winning game one more enormous than usual? If they lose with their best pitcher on the mound do you wonder if they’ll be thinking "here we go again."

So comment away. What am I missing about the Angels? Why is this the year they break the streak against the Sox?
