I expect to lose tonight. Cliff Lee put in a classic performance in Game 1. With Philly’s back to the wall, it’s hard to imagine he doesn’t put the team on his back. We’re still at Citizen’s Bank, and so the crowd is going to be a big factor. The defending champions will not want to lose their title at home. I don’t think they will.
But I also think we get that 27th ring. Like the rest of you, I saw every out of the 2004 ALCS, and so I take nothing for granted. But let’s say Lee’s great. Let’s say he shuts us down. Charlie Manuel didn’t want to pitch Lee on short rest last night against CC. Well, can Lee pitch on even shorter rest for Game 7? We all know CC can. And Wednesday night it’s Andy against Pedro, in Yankee Stadium. How many times can we light Pedro up before people get the message?
We need to play 27 outs — whether it’s tonight, or Wednesday, or Thursday. Let’s go. Nothing’s equivalent to the New York state of mind.

I don’t much remember Pedro being lit up last time. I thought that he looked better than Pettitte
The bigger focus of the game though is not Cliff Lee, but whether Giradi made the right decision to pitch AJ Burnett here in Hame 5.
Burnett, though he has a strong arm and is very durable, hasn’t showed that he can pitch on three days rest like Sabathia in this series, or even throughout his injury plagued career.
That is the key factor of this game in my eyes.
Personally, I would have started Chad Guadin here, who pitched very decently at season’s end.
And already, Johnny Damon has started it.
It’s early, but Cliff Lee looks less than dominant.
Centaur! [NEIIIIGHHHHH]
Da(e)mon continues reign of terror. 1-0 NYY.
Thank you for that. [-Rrrhhrr-]
Remember how the Phillies looked at the end of the game last night.
Unless Lee can prop ‘em up, they’re folding.
Already looking a shell of himself is Cliff Lee.
A brutal mistake to Rodriguez out over the plate………and now, the walk to Swisher.
Lee’s only first pitch strike in the game so far has been to Damon, and that was Damon’s base hit.
And Lee very lucky to get out of that inning. Very lucky.
Cano hit a shot there, and Lee was totally a shell of his Game 1 self.
Hard for Lee to be as dominant as he was in Game 1. As I mentioned last night, the Phillies needed to shut down the Yankees early. We’ll see how the next couple of innings go, but it’s not looking good.
There’s the drill!
Hey look, Victorino figured out how to get on base.
And now we get 6 scoreless innings from AJ. 3-1 Phillies.
Utley. Again. Hard to believe, but I think that’s the first multi-run homer that Philly has hit all Series.
Also, there’s no worse rally-killer than the multi-run homer. Wouldn’t surprise me if the Phillies are retired in order from here on out.
The first pitch, again, Burnett has to know that they will attack this game.
And he paid for it there.
This is certainly a boon to Cliff Lee obviously not only because he has the lead, but also, because he can relax.
That time, Cliff Lee looked nervous in that first inning, and was fortunate that Cano lined to Ibanez.
This is true.
On a similar note, all the breaks in action – Eiland visiting the mound, Tex cleaning his cleats – help bust up any momentum that the Phillies can build up, and allow Burnett to relax and gather himself.
As I thought – no more runs were scored after the homer. Speaking of runs, with his RBI double, the Centaur is now the Yankees’ all-time leader in postseason RBIs, with 16.
Gardner made that a close play. Neat.
That, somewhat oddly, was an important strikeout of Ruiz.
Has Fox put up that black box simulation of the strike-zone tonight?
The optimist in me says we’re only 2 in the hole after AJ’s bad inning, so we’re still in this.
@macaquerman: Not at all.
@Statler: Yeah, there’s a ton of baseball left to be played.
Looking at Victorino, I think we got our revenge. AJ fucked up his hand something righteous.
I just want to point out that I totally made that trivia question my bitch. Athletics. Werd.
Fuck. They had him.
Molina makes a bad throw to Jeter, lucky Chutley SB.
Man, AJ is not looking sharp at all. Who comes in on long relief?
Aceves, I’d bet.
Aceves or Gaudin after Robertson
If the offense doesn’t show up, I hope Girardi doesn’t ride the bullpen hard. Aceves has a few innings in him, and having the BP sharp with Andy on short rest is critical.
We might need to bust another phillie’s hand at this rate.
If Rollins reaches, let’s plunk Shane again.
The bottom of our lineup is a black hole.
Utley grounds out! Small victories!
Well, I’ll eat crow for predicting a Yankees blowout.
This strike zone is crazy. That last pitch from Lee was a strike.
Hinske walks, Jeter with a hit, 1st and 3rd w/Damon up.
Bad bad play from Howard
Hinske scores on Damon groundout, Jeter does a hilarious thing with his arms to avoid the shattered bat.
Nice running by Hinske!
Howard and Tex both ineffective at the plate, but Teix makes a play on that hit.
Wow, Brett.
Werth so amazed he didn’t hit a homer he rounds the bases just to be safe.
I second that wow for Gardiner
Aceves doing a good job of smothering that grenade.
Heh! I show up, Yanks score.
Two-out single from Cano.
And Cano gets on base! Your powers are vast.
Stay a while!
You know, we can get 5 runs in 6 outs if we can get Lee out of the game.
I actually like what Girardi is doing here–if the second-tier BP arms can buy time for the offense can put something together, so much the better. If not, at least he hasn’t used up the BP.
Un…fucking…real. I mean, seriously, why pitch to Utley? Why?
and we’ll need every one of them.
Fuck.
I think this lead may be Lidgeproof.
Phil Coke, everybody.
Fuck me. Phil Coke is the Phillies’ Lidge insurance.
Phil Hughes was bucking for the “shittier Phil” honors, but Phil Coke defends his title with ease.
I feel like putting Hughes in here is a mistake. He’s not going to build any confidence because the game is already out of reach, and he could get rattled even more.
I like the idea of Phil throwing in a no-pressure situation.
Hi, everyone. The GF wanted to celebrate with friends tonight. But hte game was on at the bar.
Oh look, the offense!
Horse noises!
Centaur. Here we come, dammit.
CENTAUR!!! NEIGGHHHH! Imagine if Coke hadn’t gacked there…
Down 4, six outs left. Finally into the BP.
Although nothing would be more crushing than to choke out a six-run lead…
Chan Ho Park! I’m feeling the jazz.
According to Gameday, the first two pitches to Swisher were exactly the same. Oddly, one was a strike.
8-5 Phil. I like this.
In a Yankees Universe only a little different from our own, it’s 6-5 Phil. Phil. Phil.
Obvious important for Hughes to keep this at three to put pressure on either Madsen or Lidge.
Great double play there.
OK, Hughes did his piece…let’s see if the comeback happens.
Lidgeless.
Still feelin’ the jazz.
He’s at home, cleaning the shit off the walls.
Jorgie!
PW, PW, PW ………
Captain at the plate!
OK, none of this bunting shit…
coming back
And the Phillies trying desperately to buy time for Brett Myers
fuck…a damn DP!
2007 Derek Jeter turned up at the dish. C’est la vie.
Are Philly fans *really* chanting “Derek Jeter” derisively? Really, now.
DAMON!
JONNY
Damon making a strong case for himself in 2010. Not strong enough, but still.
Centaur waiting in the stables. C’mon Tex.
Fuck! Oh, well.
Back to the Bronx. We knew this would happen.
Wednesday: we do what we do best. We fuck Pedro UP.
Shit.
I think we’ve got the big mo here. The Phillies almost squandered a 6-run lead.
Let’s give Brad Lidge the World Series ring that’s suppose to be given to Phil Coke.
New Yankee Stadium is going to be INSANE. It is well and good that this comes down to Andy vs Pedro, one last(?) time.
TV people think 4 days is not enough for Andy.
YAY Phillies.
(PW, stay away! ;)
Don’t worry, I did. :-)
lol! :)
We will find you.
I all ready have her in an undisclosed location -heh..heh..heh…
