It's like they have completely forgotten what a political party is supposed to do, and be. In order to have your candidates elected, you have to have a constituency. And the American Republican party seems to be about nothing so much as throwing people out of their 'tent'. Women? Gays? Liberals? Muslims? Latinos? Blacks? Atheists? The list of the major voting blocs they have resoundingly rejected is incredible. Do they actually WANT to regain power through an electoral process? It certainly doesn't seem as if they do. If not 2010, then 2012 SEEMS like a political opportunity for them, a chance to take advantage of an anti-incumbent sensibility engendered by a procedural inability to accomplish a significant portion of the agenda.
