The Emperor Vespasian gained much of his wealth from pay toilets. When his son expressed concern that their riches came from shit, he held a coin under his son’s nose and asked, “Do you smell anything?”

The very definition of money is its fungibility – “Legal tender for all debts, public or private.” If the Catholics don’t want DC’s money, they don’t have to take it.

I can’t recall where I saw it (maybe the WaPo0 article) but someone did point out in print that they’ve seen no sign of Catholic Charities leaving Connecticut or Massachusetts or New Hampshire.

Thanks for doing the research, efs5r! I’m new to DC, so I didn’t know they had such an Act. I thought about doing research into other jurisdictions that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and whether Catholic Charities receives government funds in those jurisdictions, but all that sounded like a lot of work.

I guess the answer is that they don’t, but that they would no longer be able to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation if the DC law passes and they continue to contract with the District.

That actually is not true. Per the DC Human Rights Act, it is illegal to discriminate against people based on either their sexual orientation, or their marital status. This is just an example of the Catholic Church making a stink and stomping their feet over the gays getting the M-word.

But in all seriousness, prominent Catholics in D.C. should really come out and condemn this bullshit. I don’t know how much influence Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry actually have with the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., if any, but enough public shaming would have to have some effect.
