Good Los Angeles Times piece about the vexed question of giving money to the Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence agency because of its ties to, like, the people we’re fighting next door.
The payments have triggered intense debate within the U.S. government, officials said, because of long-standing suspicions that the ISI continues to help Taliban extremists who undermine U.S. efforts in Afghanistan and provide sanctuary to Al Qaeda members in Pakistan.
But U.S. officials have continued the funding because the ISI’s assistance is considered crucial: Almost every major terrorist plot this decade has originated in Pakistan’s tribal belt, where ISI informant networks are a primary source of intelligence.
While I recognize that what I’m about to suggest is usually the type of proposal that results in a total debacle, why can’t we just pocket the ISI’s ties to the Taliban? Like put it to our advantage. Use the ISI as an interlocutor or a facilitator to figure out what kind of backchannel deals can be cut with the Taliban to get combatants off the battlefield. Or even to just gather intelligence about the fuckers!
Look, maybe it’s not possible. And if so, ah well. But can’t we test the proposition?

Did you see Aron Roston’s piece in the Nation of Nov 11? He shows the US military is paying Afghan “security” companies run by intimates of Karzai and other leading families to pay off the Taliban to protect US supply convoys. He mentions the amount of $2 billion plus. (Petraeus Iraq model?)
The Pakistanis say that Taliban fleeing from their military into Afghanistan are coming back with new weapons and equipment.
Don’t you think there might be a case to answer that the US military’s money is helping the Taliban fight Pakistan? Wouldn’t that mean that what we call the Afghan war is morphing into a Low intensity counter-insurgency war against Pakistan? Or would it be too insane to even begin to think that way? That would put us on both sides of the war wouldn’t it, fighting against ourselves?
Shit! Thanks for reminding me. I need to check that one out.
And what about ISI ties to Sheik:
They are still receiving millions even after this?
The Times of India reported ties between the Pak ISI and ‘moneyman Sheikh’ to Atta, notice the date:

“The FBI’s examination of the hard disk of the cellphone company Omar Sheikh had subscribed to led to the discovery of the “link” between him and the deposed chief of the Pakistani ISI, Gen. Mehmood Ahmed. And as the FBI investigators delved deep, sensational information surfaced with regard to the transfer of 100,000 dollars to Mohammed Atta, one of the Kamikaze pilots who flew his Boeing into the World Trade Centre. Gen. Mehmood Ahmed, the FBI investigators found, fully knew about the transfer of money to Atta.” From here:

” President Pervez Musharraf suddenly purged his inner circle of pro-Taliban commanders on Sunday night, in a power shift that cemented his governments dramatic break with its former Afghan allies.”

Ties that we still deny today. The fact is we have more evidence linking the Pakistani ISI to the 9/11
