Anders Fogh Rasmussen, my favorite Dane since motherfucking Hamlet, is getting crazier and crazier:
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Wednesday the Western military bloc is seeking greater Russian assistance for international operations in Afghanistan.
Speaking to reporters after talks with President Dmitry Medvedev, Rasmussen said he was inviting Russia to step up its assistance in Afghanistan, including by supplying helicopters, spare parts and fuel, and by training pilots.
This time the Russians will be equipped with laser beams and Voltron. The locals are sure to be thrilled about a narrative of essential continuity between NATO and the Russians. Can we get a Lester Grau op-ed or something to smack some sense into AFR?

Do Afghans even perceive an essential continuity between the Soviets and the Russians? I mean, I’d expect them to, but how do I know? We mostly perceive that continuity because in America we don’t (in practice) distinguish between ethnic hate and political hate, but it does seem that Afghans are really much more tolerant of diversity than Americans.
If the Sovs… er, Russians stick to training and equipping only, maybe this could work. But I am sure the older Afghans will recognize the Russian accents as their former Soviet overlords and be a tiny bit resentful. 1989 wasn’t that long ago.
I don’t know either. Nor did I mean to imply that they did. What I meant was that if that narrative is out there, this fuels it.
Fuel and supply-chain is possibly what this is about.
We still having fuel trucked through Pakistan?
